Santa Rosa, CA—Santa Rosa Junior College’s Wine Studies program launched a new degree for Wine Cellar Workers. The degree teaches students, through hands-on experience, the theory and practices used in the production of wine, including basic grape growing practices and vineyard decisions, steps in the winemaking process from harvest to bottling, basic wine lab analyses, and the use of winery production equipment. Students also get a general background in the wines of Sonoma County and the world.
The Wine Cellar Worker program offers a Certificate or an Associate degree. The Certificate requires wine classes only where the Associate degree requires both wine and general education classes.
The Wine Cellar Worker degree prepares students for positions as wine cellar workers and cellar managers. If students later choose jobs such as assistant winemaker or wine laboratory technicians, they can take the few additional classes required for the separate Enology certificate or major. The Wine Studies: Wine Cellar Worker and Wine Studies: Enology degrees differ primarily in the chemistry and wine lab classes required for the Enology certificate.
According to Dr. Kevin Sea, professor and coordinator of the SRJC Wine Studies Program,
“We are incredibly pleased to offer this new program. There is great demand for qualified wine cellar workers in the North Bay. Historically, cellar workers have come to us for training. Now they can leave with a certificate or degree to document their hard work.”

Christine Hanna is the President of her family’s winery based in Healdsburg and Santa Rosa in Sonoma County, California. She grew up at the home ranch, making tiny batches of wine with her father, winery founder Dr. Elias S. Hanna, in the late '70s and early '80s.
Christine came to work at Hanna Winery full time in 1991, first in public relations and marketing, then taking over the management in 1993. In her tenure, she has directed the winery’s growth from a few hundred cases to over 60,000, with national distribution and a robust direct to consumer program through two tasting rooms and three wine clubs. Christine has repositioned the winery’s focus to Russian River Sauvignon Blanc, a consistent award winner now representing more than half of Hanna’s production, and newly available in kegs. She transitioned the winery’s dependence away from purchased fruit to an estate program and began marketing fruit from Hanna’s vineyards to other leading wineries. She also launched the award-winning HANNA’s Reserve, Elias and Bismark Mountain tiers, to showcase the highest quality, small production wines made from the winery’s estate vineyards.
Christine is the author of The Winemaker Cooks: Menus, Parties, and Pairings, published by Chronicle Books in 2010. In the book, Hanna presents more than 100 recipes, drawing from local farmers' markets and her own Healdsburg home garden. Her menus are brought to life with 75 luscious photographs by Sheri Giblin, a San Francisco photographer. In sidebars throughout the book called “Ask the Winemaker” Christine answers the myriad questions about wine and winemaking that she’s asked every day by consumers. The Winemaker Cooks was one of three finalists for Best American Cookbook by the International Association of Culinary Professionals.
Christine’s recipes have also appeared in Food & Wine, Savor Magazine, The Tasting Panel, Imbibe, California Home+Design, and on the syndicated television show In Wine Country, and she demonstrates them to consumers at cooking classes around the country, including Williams Sonoma, Sur La Table, Central Market Cooking School in Texas, and Apron’s Cooking School in Florida.
Christine is a past President of the Sonoma County Vintners and helped reposition the organization with its current focus on strategic marketing. She served on the Board of Directors for ten years. She also served as Chairperson for the Sonoma County Showcase and Auction, directing the popular consumer food and wine event, Taste of Sonoma.
Christine is passionate about improving the lives of all students through education. She is an Adjunct Professor in the Wine Studies department at the Santa Rosa Junior College. She currently serves as a Trustee for Sonoma Academy and volunteers for the Healdsburg Unified School District. She served as President of the Board of Trustees for the Alexander Valley Unified School District. Christine holds a bachelor’s degree in English literature and a master’s degree in creative writing. She has done postgraduate work in viticulture, enology, and business at U.C. Davis and Sonoma State University.
Christine is married and has two children. They live in Healdsburg on Fitch Mountain.

Santa Rosa Junior College Shone Farm Winery was founded in 2008 and operates under the auspices of the Shone Farm Foundation, an auxiliary organization of the college. Located in the Warren G. Dutton Jr. Agriculture Pavillion in the Russian River Valley, the winery utilizes state-of-the-art equipment and winemaking procedures to ensure the production of premium wines indicative of the Russian River Valley appellation. The majority of the wines being produced are from estate grown grapes of Shone Farm. The Shone Farm Winery is committed to quality, and all wines must pass a rigorous review by a professional testing panel before being released for sale.
The wines are made by professional winemakers, with students learning the art of winemaking from crush pad to bottling.
Shone Farm has 84 acres of grapes that are sold to several Sonoma County premium wineries. In addition to commercial use, the vineyard also provides a venue for instruction. Students in the Viticulture Program spend time in the vineyard involved in various tasks; monitoring for pests and diseases, performing canopy management assessments, making crop projections for each commercial block of grapes, and pruning selected blocks.
We invite you to try the wines of Shone Farm and experience what we achieve when students and professionals winemakers come together to handcraft wine.
Cheers!
