LibDib Named “Best Technology Innovation” by Beverage Wholesaler

San Jose, CA, December 3, 2024LibDib, the leading web-based alcohol distributor, proudly announces its recognition for “Best Technology Innovation” by Beverage Wholesaler in their prestigious Distributor Best Practices Awards. This accolade underscores LibDib's commitment to transforming the beverage alcohol industry through cutting-edge technology, specifically the company's LibTech SaaS division.

"We are absolutely thrilled to receive this recognition as it’s a testament to the hard work and dedication of our team to push the boundaries of what's possible in the beverage distribution space,” said Richard Brashears, COO of LibDib and General Manager of the LibTech Division. “Our mission has always been to transform the industry through cutting-edge technology and this recognition affirms that we have built the leading platform. The LibTech division now brings this platform to any beverage alcohol industry player.”

Beverage Wholesaler announced their first annual Distributor Best practice Awards, in their Winter 2024 issue. The awards honor wholesaler leaders who have demonstrated innovation in running efficient, successful operations. LibDib’s technology innovation award was featured alongside other winning distributors including Republic National Distributing Company (RNDC) for Best Sustainability Initiative, Southern Glazer's Wine & Spirits for Best On-Premise Activation Program, Breakthru Beverage Group for Best Workforce Development Program, and Columbia Distributing for Best Warehouse Innovation.

“It’s an honor to be recognized alongside the most prestigious names in distribution,” said Cheryl Durzy, Founder and CEO of LibDib. “This truly validates the hard work and innovation that has gone into building our platform and affirms our approach to technology-driven distribution.”

As both a technology provider and licensed wholesale distributor, LibDib has revolutionized the industry with its robust online platform. This platform offers legal three-tier distribution to any wine or spirits supplier, seamlessly integrating distribution, online ordering, reporting, and AI-enabled sales tools. The result is an unparalleled data-driven experience for suppliers and buyers alike.

Currently, LibDib provides online distribution across 16 markets, with plans to expand into additional markets soon. The platform supports over 15,000 products from 1,500 suppliers, marking a significant milestone as the first distributor to offer such extensive access to any supplier.

In 2019, LibDib began licensing its platform to RNDC, the industry's second-largest wholesaler. This collaboration has facilitated over $1.8 billion in orders. Building on this success, LibDib launched LibTech in 2024, a dedicated division focused on making their proven platform available to other three-tier businesses. LibTech has already gained traction with mid-sized wholesalers and suppliers nationwide. Recently, Best Brands, a leading statewide distributor in Tennessee, adopted LibDib's technology to enhance their online distribution and data capabilities.

Beverage Wholesaler is the leading publication for the beverage alcohol industry, dedicated exclusively to wholesalers, distributors, and brokers. Reaching over 6,500 decision-makers nationwide, it serves as a critical resource for the beer, wine, and distilled spirits sectors.

The LibDib “Happiness Curve

Since 2017, we’ve proudly touted our fun tagline at LibDib: “We deliver happiness.” Everything we do aims to keep all sides of the equation (Maker, Buyer and LibDibber) happy and satisfied  with our platform and operational processes.

So, let’s chat about what we call the LibDib “Happiness Curve” and how to keep the good vibes going from start to finish.

First off, we know that distribution isn’t a walk in the park. Whomever you choose as your distributor, there’s a lot of compliance, pricing and operational complexities to work through. However, with patience and effort comes reward. In most cases, LibDib Makers simply enter their information once and then maintain their LibDib accounts with minimal effort in the future.

Sure there can be some bumps in the road, especially in the very beginning. However, by following a few tips Makers can keep a smile on their face while jetting around the platform for all of their distribution needs.

Note: Our team can provide most Makers with an initial 30-minute consultation about how LibDib works and then send you on your way with some direction and links. However, if you need more assistance or a “Spirit Guide” throughout your journey, consider a LibDib Extras Program

  1. Compliance is key. Makers need to understand how compliance works. In short, you need a TTB Basic Permit, a Home State Permit and something (permit, price posting, Brand Label registration, or a combination of the three) in the state where the products are to be sold. The first two pages of our Go Live Guides outline what is needed. And yes, it is different in every state.
  2. Know LibDib logisticsShipping can feel like a puzzle at times. In most states, there are two shipping legs. New York and Florida are the exceptions, where you choose between one or two legs (depending on the Buyer’s preferences). We use LibShip (powered by FedEx) for the first leg of shipping—it’s built into our platform, keeps things compliant, and it’s economical too. Costs for this are billed back to Makers. The second leg is handled by our warehouse partners, with a Dock and Delivery fee built into the Buyer's cost. Also, don’t forget your Alcohol Shippers Permit—and make sure your shipments are packed safely. Damaged shipments are a quick way to kill the happy vibes.
  3. Know the costsHere is a very detailed outline of what it costs to be on LibDib. Do not be surprised about a shipping billback. That is a definite happiness killer.
  4. Have basic knowledge of distribution and the LibDib business model. LibDib is most successful for the Makers who utilize the platform to access three-tier markets via technology. Our Basic model is free for everyone, so all Makers have a route to market. However, Makers should understand that just because you post something on LibDib, it doesn’t mean it is going to sell. Just like in traditional distribution channels, Makers need to “make their own rain.” Without this understanding, Makers can be disappointed that their offerings are not selling in volume. Remember--the beverage alcohol industry is a highly competitive space. Makers need to own their relationships and brand stories while giving Buyers a reason to buy products. If you want assistance in your first placements, LibDib’s Gold program provides Makers with opportunities. Click here for more information.
  5. Handle the hiccups with patience and kindness. If things go haywire; be timely…and kind. 95-98% of shipments are fulfilled without incident. For about 2-5% of shipments, there are “issues.” Breakage, warehouse mispicks, confused Buyers. It happens. Makers. Please know that LibDibbers are always working hard to fix a situation gone wrong. Please respond in a timely manner. If you are frustrated, please don’t take it out on our team or the LibDib process. Sh*t happens. But we will all get through it together.

We hope this helps all you LibDib Makers enjoy a smooth start and long-term distribution success with LibDib.

Agave, Agave Everywhere…the Latest Craft Tequila and Mezcal Brands Are Now On LibDib

One of the larger industry trends reflected here at LibDib is the proliferation of craft tequila and mezcal brands. These brands have amazing stories behind them and we love supporting small importers and distilleries. So do our retail, bar and restaurant customers throughout our 15 states.

Here’s a sample of a few of the most amazing craft tequila and mezcal brands:

Black Sheep Tequila: For spirits connoisseurs craving a taste for something new, yet extraordinarily steeped in tradition, Black Sheep Tequila provides a line of tequilas produced entirely from the labor-intensive, centuries-old, hands-on process. This tequila is sourced from only the highest-quality 100 percent Weber Blue Agave and is traditionally handcrafted to create the perfect balance of flavors. Additive free, Black Sheep shares clean unique styles of tequila, including the famous Still Strength Aged 15 Year Extra Añejo, Barrel Strength Extra Añejo, Extra Añejo, Añejo, Reposado, and Blanco.

Black Sheep Tequila is available via LibDib in California, Colorado, Illinois, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, and Wisconsin. The brand is also available via RNDC on Demand in Indiana, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Texas.

Erstwhile Mezcal: Is a woman-owned, women-led business, that works closely with women master distillers who head their family businesses. Owner Yuan and her team are outspoken about elevating underrepresented voices – including but not limited to those of women – in mezcal and the broader wine and spirits industry.  Erstwhile's award-winning mezcal portfolio has been validated by years of sales data and repeat orders from retail buyers and end-user consumers alike, all over the United States. Erstwhile Mezcal is available via LibDib in Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois and Maryland. The brand is also available in Louisiana via RNDC On Demand.

Firme Mezcal: From the slopes of the sunny hills of Oaxaca, magueys bathe with the warm rays of the sun. Firme Mezcal is born from the Mexican-American experience and the reverence to their ancestors. Hardworking counterparts in lands divided by a river but united by a passion. Firme Mezcal was born from a passion for mezcal, with the pride of being an immigrant on a foreign land and the honor to enjoy the gifts passed down from father to son and mother to daughter. Firme Mezcal is owned and operated by Ochoa Imports LLC, and its founder, Alberto Ochoa, takes pride and honors the culture, heritage and love for mezcal. Firme Mezcal is available via LibDib in California.

Luna Nueva: Meaning “The New Moon,” Luna Nueva is a nod to the darkest night of every month, when the sky is unburdened by light. A time that marks the beginning of a cosmic cycle that balances our world. This brand’s story starts in Jalisco, the birthplace of tequila, under the darkness of la Luna Nueva. It was on these nights, in the sanctity of the Sierra del Tigre mountains, that Luna Nueva’s tequila master had a dream. He wanted to create a spirit that fostered introspection, new beginnings, and an ascent from darkness. He wanted to harness the regenerative power of the New Moon through Mexico’s most ancient tonic. The small batch tequila is made from 100% pure blue weber agave, without any additives, flavors, or colors. Luna Nueva uses pristine spring water from the Sierra del Tigre mountains, along with a blend of highland and lowland agave, to capture an elevated flavor. The result is a clean product that honors tradition and the natural world.

Luna Nueva is available via LibDib in California.

Tequila Corrido: This tequila has roots tracing back to the poetic ballads, or corridos, sung by daring smugglers during the Prohibition era, risking all to share the soul-stirring elixir of tequila in borderland regions. Each harvest starts with the finest Blue Weber agave handpicked from the highlands of Jalisco, Mexico. Picked for maximum maturity and sugar content, these agave piñas  are carefully cooked in low pressure autoclaves. The sugars from the agave dance with a proprietary, 100 percent all-natural yeast to produce the base nectar, which is then double distilled. As one of only a few tequilas certified additive free, the refined, double-distilled approach and precise barrel aging process ensures each batch is meticulously crafted every time. Tequila Corrido is available via LibDib in California and Florida.

Acre Largo: Brothers Seth & Zac Longaker's longtime affinity for Mexico dates back to their San Diego college days in the early 1990s. Countless excursions across the border led to a lifelong fondness for the country, their people, culture and of course libations. It was on one of their numerous jaunts south that led them to a serendipitous crossing of the paths with a mystery man in Leon, Guanajuato. It was at this meeting on the rooftop of a local coffee shop where the three men sat sipping tequila well into the evening that the Odyssey of Acre Largo originated. That warm July night, the quest to produce one of the finest tequilas the world has ever tasted set about and the brother’s unrelenting dedication to learn and pay homage to the great tequila makers of Mexico began to unfold.

4 things to know about Acre Largo:

1. Small Batch, Additive Free - Uncomplicated yet exceptional, every bottle of Acre Largo is meticulously crafted in small batches, ensuring the highest quality and purity. With a commitment to using only natural ingredients and traditional production methods, our tequila embodies the rich heritage and uncompromising quality of Mexican tequila-making.

2. Estate Grown Agave - Cultivated on their own land, the agave plants thrive under the watchful eye of skilled jimadores, guaranteeing that only the most exceptional, fully mature plants are selected. This attention to detail yields a flavor profile that captures the essence of the terroir and embodies the bold flavors for which Los Altos is renowned.

3. Family-Owned/A Legacy of Craftsmanship -  Acre Largo epitomizes the rich tradition and enduring dedication of a multi-generational family-run tequila distillery. Rooted in a legacy of craftsmanship and unwavering passion, each bottle reflects meticulously preserved time-honored techniques passed down through generations. This deep-seated commitment to excellence is woven into the fabric of our distillery, fueling our relentless pursuit of crafting tequila of unparalleled quality and character.

4. Award-Winning - In 2023, Acre Largo Blanco won Double Gold in the San Francisco World Spirits Competition.

Acre Largo is available via LibDib in California

LibDib’s Control State Strategy and Our First Control Market: Pennsylvania

When LibDib launched in 2017, the goal of the company was to give all Makers the opportunity to sell their products in any market to the Buyers that want them. From the beginning,   my personal goal has been to find a path to market for all Makers in any state. Today, LibDib is well on our way to these goals, with 15 markets now operating and a few markets pending with licenses submitted.

As many of you know, 17 states in the U.S. are known as “control” states. In control states, the state actually acts as the wholesaler and in many cases the retailer. In these markets, LibDib’s role is more as a broker with fulfillment assistance.

LibDib has an extensive portfolio of Makers across our markets and great relationships with many craft distilleries and small production, unique winemakers. Within control states LibDib’s goal is to build relationships with key contacts and  educate the market leaders on what LibDib can bring to consumers in their state. With the LibDib business model, we fulfill small orders very efficiently and can sell small amounts of unique items, creating an almost endless aisle for Control Markets.

LibDib is excited to beta test this program in the largest control state, Pennsylvania. We are early in our process, but any Makers  interested in participating, can fill out this form and we will get back to you when there is interest in your product category. It’s that simple to start the process!

We look forward to bringing some cool products to consumers throughout the market.

Cheers to Pennsylvania, the state of Independence! We look forward to expanding in this market.

Introducing RNDC On Demand (formerly LibDib@RNDC)

A quick update for our Makers, especially in Texas, Indiana, Louisiana, Georgia, Oklahoma and Kentucky: we have changed the name of LibDib@RNDC to RNDC On Demand. This rebranding has been a long time coming and will provide more opportunities for our Makers, especially on RNDC’s amazing ecommerce site, eRNDC.

Why the change? The reasons are outlined below. One of the great benefits of being a nimble start-up is the ability to see a challenge with an existing model, find a solution, and pivot.

  • Buyer Awareness: LibDib is only the technology provider for RNDC On Demand. so Having LibDib in the name  was causing confusion and Buyers were going to the LibDib platform g to sign up for the RNDC division and purchase those offerings. This makes it clear to Buyers who the distributor is in each transaction.
  • Maker Awareness: It is our goal to break down any confusion when it comes to distribution for our makers, especially those who are new to the business. We have an incredible Help Center, Go Live Guides, and content available via our Blog. We realize we need to adopt a naming convention that makes it clear who the distributor is (LibDib or RNDC) in each market.
  • RNDC On Demand is a Better Name: Anything with the @ symbol is kinda cool, but it didn’t really explain what we do and how it is done. On Demand is very clear in regards to what we do: we get products to Buyers that want them, when they want them.

We hope this change makes things smoother for both Buyers and Makers, as that’s our primary goal here at LibDib. Simplifying distribution and getting bottles to the Buyers that want them.

The Drizly Void and How Makers Can Navigate It with LibDib

By Cheryl Durzy, Founder & CEO, LibDib

From my desk here at LibDib, the recent closure of Drizly has been a topic of both professional and personal contemplation. Drizly wasn't just another tech startup; it was a pioneer in the compliant delivery of alcohol, blending innovative tech with a flair for irreverent marketing—exactly what the beverage industry needed back in 2015. Despite its downfall, partly hastened by a significant data breach, I have only respect for what Drizly achieved and for its team, some of whom I've been fortunate enough to know personally.

In fact, one of the Drizly founders reached out to me within days of LibDib's launch. We discussed potential synergies, shared visions and experiences that highlighted the power of innovation in our field. Later, during the pandemic, we even exchanged town hall meetings and company swag, fostering a spirit of camaraderie. These interactions are cherished memories now (along with my Drizly hoodie), especially poignant since Drizly's acquisition by Uber.

Today, the conversation has shifted towards filling the void left by Drizly. There are several types of “DTC’ businesses entering the chat. I am proud to say LibDib remains steady, supporting all of them, offering distribution for ALL distilleries and wineries in 15 states.

For those Makers looking for the who, what, why and where in terms of navigating e-commerce in a post Drizly world, here’s how the LibDib model supports each opportunity::

  1. E-commerce marketplace platforms (not exclusive to alcohol)Instacart, DoorDash, UberEats. Makers wanting to be available on these platforms need to obtain placements with the Buyer that is selling on that platform. For example, Instacart delivers for Costco. If you have a placement at Costco, then users of Instacart will be able to purchase your products via the site or app for delivery. LibDib will support Costco’s purchase as the distributor of your product on  record.

  2. Large Retailers: Total Wine, BevMo/GoPuff, Kroger, wine.comThese retailers have their own platforms but also often participate in the aforementioned platforms like Instacart and UberEats (I love an omni-channel approach; however, companies lose key customer data to the marketplace when consumers choose to shop there. There might also be additional fees for the consumer). However, for Makers who are interested in these opportunities--LibDib operates the same way by obtaining placements with the Store/Buyer.  Their offerings will be available on those sites. LibDib is the distributor that sells to the retailer.

  3. White Label E-Commerce for Independent Retailers (Bottlecapps, City Hive, Gotoliquorstore.com)Drizly had about 4K retailers on their platform when they shut their doors. Some retailers were not very happy with being part of a larger marketplace where their products could be comparison shopped by price. UberEats et al do things a little differently--a user needs to go into each individual “store” to see the price; however comparisons can be done within the single app experience.

White label e-commerce gives retailers their own branded site and app, along with the ability to control their customer’s experience when it comes to price, offerings, sort arrangement, promotions and even loyalty programs. Both Bottlecapps and City Hive have reported increased new customer acquisition after the Drizly news. Retailers that have these white-labeled apps/sites can purchase a Maker’s offerings from LibDib (we are available in 15 states, covering almost 70% of alcohol drinkers) and make those products available for consumer purchase online. . Makers that want to be on these storefronts should target sales calls to Buyers that have their own sites.

  4. E-Premise/Buy it Now Buttons for Brands, sold by retailers. We define e-premise here at LibDib as Makers who provide consumers a way to purchase offerings from their own website. Most of our Makers will partner with a third party provider for this capability: AccelPayBarCartBig ThirstBottle Nexus, Liquid RailsShotsBoxSpeakeasy and Thirstie all seem to be the most popular with our Makers. Orders will come through the Maker’s website and are assigned to a retailer closest/most compliant to the consumer to fulfill the order.

Since LibDib covers most major markets, we are often the distributor of record getting the orders from distillery to retailer. The retailer places the order with LibDib. LibDib gets it to the retailer compliantly. Retailer then ships to the consumer.

LibDib Gold Members are eligible for discounts with some of these businesses. Click here to learn more about the program

  5. Alcohol Only Marketplaces: CaskersReserveBar, Liquid Library, ForWhiskeyLovers.com There are still quite a few marketplaces that are entirely focused on alcohol, with just a few named here. Similar to the Buy it Now Button folks (which some of these companies actually run both a marketplace and e-premise options for Makers), sales to consumers are fulfilled by partner retailers. LibDib orders from the Maker, the Maker ships compliantly to the warehouse/retailer. LibDib can assist Makers with listings on some of these marketplaces and start the journey towards “liquid to lips.”

Ultimately, there will be opportunities to fill the half a billion dollar hole left by Drizly. Thanks to their innovation and team that paved the way, Makers can provide customers with access to their products via e-commerce capabilities.

Distribution

About

LibDib is the first fully licensed, three-tier distributor with a web platform. This platform allows Restaurants, Bars & Retailers (RB&Rs) to legally and efficiently purchase boutique wines and craft spirits made by Makers of all sizes. LibDib manages the delivery and handles all payment processing, for a streamlined distribution process.

Via LibDib, any Maker of specialty wine and craft spirits, can easily create an account and input their products of choice. After uploading a license and basic information, Makers define each SKU, calculats the listed wholesale price, and define where to distribute product—down to the account level.

Using LibDib, Buyers upload a license and purchase products online, streamlining the order process for both parties. Buyers can access sales materials within the platform, communicate directly with Makers, request samples, or set up automatic reorders or reminders. Buyers then receive the product via a LibDib distribution partner, 3PL or a common carrier (depending on the market and compliance regulations).
