Lumo and AvidWater Announce Strategic Partnership to Bring Precision Irrigation Smart Valves to the Central Coast

SANTA ROSA, Calif., Dec. 17, 2024-- Lumo, the precision irrigation company that invented the world's first smart irrigation valves, and AvidWater, a leading statewide full-service irrigation company, announced today a new strategic partnership to bring Lumo's precision irrigation system and AvidWater's unparalleled service to more California growers.

The expansion comes on the heels of Lumo's overwhelming success in Napa and Sonoma. Over 70 vineyards, and 5 of the 10 largest winegrape growers in the US, are already using Lumo smart valves to automate their irrigation and dial in their precision. With 24/7 remote control and block-level visibility into applied water volumes, growers are finally able to reliably verify that their crops are receiving the right amounts of water at the right times.

"The demand from growers beyond Napa and Sonoma has been strong, but we knew we needed to have dedicated local support in place to deliver an exceptional experience to farmers. That piece is critical," said Devon Wright, Lumo's CEO. "We feel confident moving into new regions like the Central Coast because of AvidWater's stellar reputation as a world class installation and support partner across California."

AvidWater has a proven track record of helping growers adopt and implement leading irrigation technology to improve crop outcomes, reduce waste, and drive efficiency gains. Partnering with Lumo to sell, install, and support their smart-valve system is a logical continuation of that tradition and will strengthen AvidWater's ability to deliver differentiated value to their customer base.

"More than ever, growers need a reliable way to automate their irrigation, and to use their time and resources as efficiently as possible. Innovation isn't just nice to have. It's a necessity in today's market," said Frank M. Toves, AvidWater's President and CEO. "We're proud to help support and accelerate Lumo's expansion to the Central Coast, and beyond, at this critical time for the industry. Providing leading precision irrigation systems to growers? Yeah, AW does that."

As the industry continues to face economic headwinds—changing weather patterns, labor shortages, increasing regulatory oversight—the need for cost-effective automation solutions with built-in accountability only continues to grow. This strategic partnership between AvidWater and Lumo will help pave the way forward to a more efficient, more sustainable, and more profitable future for growers.

Precision Irrigation: Reliable Smart Valves Build Winegrowers’ Confidence

It’s generally believed that farmers are slow to adopt new technology. Yet, while this adage may be true for more expensive and untested innovations, when a new technology is practical, affordable and can prove its value and reliability, farmers will indeed set aside their innate caution and readily invest.

Tyler Klick is a case in point. As the viticulturist and a co-owner of Redwood Empire Vineyard Management in Geyserville, CA, he decided to try an innovative smart irrigation technology developed by Lumo. Klick first installed Lumo smart valves on a few client vineyards last season. After seeing how they helped increase labor efficiency, reduce wasted water, and improve clients’ crop outcomes, he rolled it out to more than a dozen vineyards his company manages. “I’d love to get to a point where all of our clients have it installed,” says Klick.

Lumo smart valves also help West Coast viticulturists adjust to changing weather patterns, which have brought triple-digit heat waves to Californian vineyards. By reducing pump capacity and labor constraints, Lumo enables growers to rapidly respond to heat events. Vineyard teams can open and close valves from their mobile devices or schedule the valves to open at night automatically.

Another Lumo customer took advantage of that automation capability to save on labor and energy costs. After installing Lumo smart valves in two blocks in 2023, this season Wente Vineyards deployed them across 100 acres on their Ernest ranch. Their goal was to automate irrigation cycles to run during non-peak hours, allowing them to take advantage of lower energy rates.

Wente’s Viticulture Manager, Hannah Lindner, says, “All our valves were manual before, and we had to send irrigation teams out to open and close each valve at the beginning and end of the day — a continuous job. With the Lumo smart valves, we have this micro-control, and we have confidence in the valves' ability to give us the quality we want from the vineyard.” Lindner also knows that if a leak occurs while everyone is sleeping, the Lumo system will send an alert.

Lumo’s founder and CEO, Devon Wright, explains that “Lumo gives the farmer confidence. You can’t have reliable automation without accountability. A system that opens and closes valves doesn’t meet the automation goal. A farmer needs to be confident that the right amount of water comes out without having to pay people to go make sure the pump is on and there are no leaks.”

Hannah Lindner, Viticulture Manager, Wente

These are money-saving assists for farmers, but Lumo goes far beyond turning water on and off automatically. It enhances their visibility into irrigation issues that can be difficult to detect by eye. For example, determining how much water the system is emitting or whether filters are clogged. Farmers can use Lumo’s software to track flow rates on their mobile devices, making it easy to see if they dip below expectation. If they do, a team member can go out to flush the filters or resolve any other problems needed to return the performance to the desired rate. Relying solely on in-person oversight in the field might have delayed bringing a similar issue to light for days, resulting in the crop being underwatered. Other irrigation strategies include scheduling repeated irrigation patterns, such as half-hour on and half-hour off, for growers with sandier soil or hardpan so that no water is wasted.

In addition to increased labor, energy and water efficiency, growers like Lindner and Klick find that adopting Lumo’s more precise tracking of irrigation volumes improves yield and quality measures. At the same time, the data it collects lets them learn from each season and dial in their precision.

Installing Lumo smart valves takes as little as one-tenth of the time needed for other systems since there’s no need to trench in wires. It’s also three to five times more affordable than trying to piece together solenoid valves, sensors, telemetry units and software.

Lumo’s success in making precision irrigation easier to execute than ever for its customers has led to rapid expansion in the Livermore, Lodi, Napa and Sonoma County regions, establishing a solid client base that is, in turn, expanding its deployment of Lumo smart valves in their vineyards. These customers know that Lumo is committed to the grape-growing industry, and the company’s expansion into new regions in 2025 will reinforce that they’re here to stay.

Using Tech to Make Life Easier for Vineyard Managers

Andy White, an Account Manager at Lumo and the author of this article, installing a Lumo smart valve.

I need to be honest with you about something…I had the idea for Lumo ten years ago.

Well, that might be an overstatement. But at some point, I realized the flow meter was key for automation accountability.

In fact, I’d bet you half the vineyard managers in Napa have had that idea at one point or another, because we’ve all found ourselves at the altar of the irrigation gods, praying that nothing is going terribly wrong with that automated timer system we set up a week ago and haven’t had a chance to go back to check on.

And sure, from the outside looking in, you might wonder what would drive a vineyard manager to use a system with no built-in accountability, no remote control, no leak alerts or visibility into how much water you’re applying. Why would you put yourself in that position? It’s obviously not where you want to be.

Of course it’s not. But it’s a tough place to avoid.

The Rock and the Hard Place

You see, when it comes to irrigation, vineyard managers have been stuck between a rock and a hard place for a long time.

The rock is doing it manually, which sucks, not just because it still leaves you with a lack of visibility into how much water you’re putting down, but also just because it takes forever. It’s error prone and inefficient. Especially if it’s a long drive out to the ranch. No one has that kind of time. There’s too much to do and too few hours in the day.

Automation becomes the obvious answer…but that’s the hard place.

Because automated timers don’t provide accountability. You can put in your schedule, but there’s no way to know whether it’s being carried out as intended. You don’t know if a line broke or a valve was left closed. You could come back to a flooded field, or a desert.

So you automate and pray…which is when the idea for Lumo hits you, “Sure would be great if we had a flow meter for accountability!”

It’s frustrating to me that it’s taken agtech so long to solve the irrigation problem.

I don’t work as a vineyard manager any more, but I love the outdoors and being out in the field. I love growing plants and playing a part in the cycle of the seasons. It’s rewarding to be there from the beginning and to get to see your hard work through the season eventually pay off during harvest.

But it was also just a really hard job. 60-hour workweeks. Always on call. I don’t think most people appreciate just how stressful farming can be at times. How much pressure there is to produce.

Over the years, I slowly found my way out of the vineyard and into agtech, mostly because I really do believe that there’s a lot of potential to use the technology we have today to make people’s jobs easier. That’s something I’ve been interested in for a long time.

But there’s also still a disconnect between ag and tech. More often than not agtech companies are still building solutions and then searching for problems, even though that way of doing things tends to produce lots of cool tech and little in the way of practical benefit.

So when my friend Ernie first mentioned Lumo to me, I was a skeptic, wary that it would just be a bunch of tech bros who didn’t really know what problem they were trying to solve.

But then I checked out their website and learned that they were all about smart valves with flow meters for built-in accountability…and immediately thought, “Hey! That’s my idea!”

And then I started talking with Devon, Lumo’s founder and CEO, and Ishan, Lumo’s Senior Product Manager, and it quickly became clear that they actually know what they’re doing and that they actually know what problem they’re solving. In fact, I know Devon won’t be mad about me saying that Lumo was my idea because he would be the first person to tell you that he got the idea by working as an irrigator and speaking with growers directly.

In other words, it was obvious that Lumo wasn’t your typical agtech product, team or company, and I slowly started to believe that this Lumo thing is legit and that I needed to be a part of it.

Lumo is the solution I would’ve wanted as a vineyard manager.

If Lumo had existed when I was still managing vineyards, I don’t know if I would’ve stayed at it longer or not. It’s hard to say.

But I can tell you for certain that it would’ve made my life ten times easier.

I can still remember one time, I’m working at a vineyard management company and have this ranch way out in the middle of nowhere. Now, an important quirk of that system was that they had the water for all their landscaping tied into the vineyard manifold.

Anyway, I didn’t have the time to be driving out there every other day, so I set up some timers to automate the irrigation runs. I knew it wasn’t perfect, but there wasn’t anything better.

So two weeks go by and then I get this frantic call from the winery owner about how he had just put in all this new landscaping and now all his plants were dead because they hadn’t gotten any water in two weeks!

News to me.

It turned out that someone had closed the valve to the main tank and the entire vineyard hadn’t gotten any water for two weeks either. And now here I am, trying to explain to my customer that I did this to try to save him money and avoid having to charge him for all that driving, and instead I’m getting chewed out for his brand new landscaping plants being dead.

It sucked. But that was the situation you were stuck in.

If I had had Lumo at the time, I would’ve received a text saying there was no flow on my very first irrigation and avoided the whole fiasco.

At Lumo, I do get to make vineyard managers’ jobs easier.

Since joining Lumo, I’ve been working as an Account Manager, which does involve some selling, but also a lot of hands-on work in the field supporting our smart valves and ensuring irrigations run smoothly.

And it’s amazing to see the difference in the field. The level of visibility is unreal.

The other morning, a block was recording no flow, so I sent a text to the customer and it turned out a manual valve had been left closed. Customer gets it opened, flow shoots up to normal. Problem solved. That’s what built-in accountability does. That’s the difference having real-time alerts and support can make.

An even cooler example. The other day I was reviewing a customer’s flow data with Ernie and we see a block with lower flow than normal. So we check back and see that a manual irrigation had run a couple hours before. We think, “Huh? Maybe a fertigation? And maybe that fertilizer injection clogged the filter?”

Sure enough, we ask the customer, they confirm that’s exactly what happened, clean the filter, and two minutes later, the flow rate is back to normal.

These are things that you wouldn’t be able to see with any other system. Heck, these are things you wouldn’t be able to see even if you were in the vineyard! It’s hard to tell how much water is dripping from emitters just by eye. Having a flow meter on every block changes the game. You can irrigate automatically, with accountability and a whole new level of precision.

Lumo smart valves help vineyard managers get out of the irrigation pickle that I always found myself in five years ago working as a vineyard manager. It’s a way to get out from between the rock and the hard place, and enter into a world where they can not only automate their irrigation and save a bunch of time, but more importantly, they can see how their system is performing and how much water is being applied to each block. They can control their system from wherever they are and can schedule irrigations at whatever time works best. And they get real-time alerts about all the things that they used to lie awake worrying about at night.

With Lumo, vineyard managers no longer need to pray at the altar of the irrigation gods. And they no longer have to daydream about a system with built-in flow meters.

That system exists. And it’s making the job of vineyard management easier by the day.

That’s why I got into agtech in the first place, and it’s why I’m proud to have joined Lumo.

Irrigation Smart Valve Precision Irrigation

How Smart Valves Resolve the Precision Paradox

Since I started working at Lumo, I’ve been intrigued by a paradox that lies at the heart of water management in agriculture.

On one hand, growers understand that irrigation is one of the most important tools they have at their disposal for increasing crop quality and yield. They know it’s absolutely crucial to put on the right volumes at the right times.

And yet, many growers don’t actually know exactly how much water they’re applying. They lack real-time visibility and volume-based control.

How could that possibly be?

Two reasons: operational difficulty and cost.

Most growers don’t know the precise volumes of water they’re applying to their crops, even though they know just how important it is to get those volumes right, because, at least before smart valves were invented, it was both too hard and too expensive to be exact.

Let’s take the operational piece first.

When you’re relying on an irrigator to open and close valves by hand, it’s extremely difficult to be precise. An irrigator can only work for so many hours. They can easily get caught in traffic, or get caught up in whatever they’re doing and lose track of time. There are a whole bunch of different reasons why water might run an hour or two longer than intended.

Even if you know intellectually that precise volumes are important, it simply doesn’t matter if your operations only allow you to deliver rough durations anyway. This has been the reality for so long that many growers have come to believe that being more precise is impossible. There’s no use trying. The juice isn’t worth the squeeze.

Which leads us to the second piece...cost.

Because of the importance of irrigation, there have been countless attempts to automate the turning of valves and to cobble together solutions for tracking volumes.

But in addition to adding operational complexity, these solutions have also been cost prohibitive. The price point matters. If a solution is too expensive, it can easily offset any gains in quality or yield, and your return goes out the window. Add in a bit of downtime at the wrong time, and there’s no wonder why so many growers end up going back to irrigating manually.

Smart valves deliver precision and operational simplicity at a price that makes sense.

With internet-connected smart valves, growers gain a level of operational control that they’ve never had before. They can turn their valves with a tap on their smartphone from wherever they are. They can set up irrigation schedules and completely automate the process.

They’re no longer bound by the number of working hours in their irrigator’s day, or by how long the drive takes to get to the ranch. They can avoid peak electricity rates and irrigate at night. And with the flow meter that comes built into each valve, they can finally irrigate based on volume.

Even better, those volumes automatically get logged and securely stored, so growers know exactly how much water was applied to each block without doing any manual reconciliation work.

No clipboards. No spreadsheets. No entering start and stop times anywhere.

Delivering precise water volumes is simply way, way easier with smart valves. As is verifying those volumes after that fact. So much less time. So much less effort.

And to top it off, smart valves are much less expensive than the alternatives. Piecing together a similar solution with solenoid valves, sensors, telemetry units and software costs 3-5 times more.

Until now, growers have simply not been set up for irrigation success.

To date, growers have done their best with what they had.

But they’ve faced binding operational constraints and been given inadequate tools. Because they haven’t been able to deliver precise volumes, it made little sense to put in the effort to track their water usage more closely.

Smart valves shift the paradigm.

They make delivering precise volumes easy, they make tracking those volumes automatic, and they do both at a price point that allows the potential gains in crop quality and yield to fall directly to the grower’s bottom line.

Smart valves finally make it possible and profitable to be as precise as growers have long wished they could be.

Getting your irrigation right—how much and when—is critical to crop quality and yield.

Your canopy management strategy, deficit strategy, nutrient spending, agronomic intent, and water moving energy are all to a degree wasted if you don’t get your irrigation right.

But irrigating precisely and consistently is still far harder, more complicated, and difficult to verify than it should be. Irrigating manually is time consuming and largely leaves you in the dark, while traditional controller-based automation tools tend to add more complexity, expense, and points of failure.

Lumo’s automation system is different. With patented smart valves, easy-to-use software, and a highly responsive support team, Lumo makes irrigating with precision as simple and straightforward as it should be, while giving growers security and peace of mind.

Join us on July 18 at 11am to learn from Val King, one of the industry’s top irrigation experts, and see how Lumo delivers unprecedented visibility, greater execution flexibility, and more operational levers to pull against the realities of labor, water, and climate. Pioneering Smart Irrigation Company Reports Exciting ROI Results through Cutting-Edge Automation Technology

Lumo, the California-based smart irrigation company launched by CEO and Founder Devon Wright and his team just two years ago, knew it had something to offer winegrowers in terms of revolutionizing the way agriculture could be done.

Now, within that very short time frame, Lumo can say with utmost confidence that its cutting-edge technology and accountable irrigation practices are having a verifiable and positive effect on bottom line financials at a time when the wine industry needs it most.

“From day one at Lumo, we’ve known that irrigation automation, first and foremost, needs to make financial sense for the grower,” affirms Steele Roddick, Lumo’s Senior Digital Marketing Manager. “As a company and a team we are relentlessly focused on seamlessly integrating our technology into the day-to-day operations of growers and holding ourselves accountable for delivering real results.”

Roddick emphasized that the costs savings from using Lumo’s Lumo One smart valves and other supporting technologies comes from five critical areas:

  • Irrigation Labor and Overhead/Administrative Costs – automating irrigation runs eliminates the need for workers to drive to ranches to manually open and close valves.  Irrigation labor needs can be reduced by as much as 90 percent.
  • Reduced Pumping Costs – Growers save water by Lumo catching leaks automatically, shifting to nighttime irrigation and watering with greater precision, based on specific volumes.
  • Off Peak Energy Use Savings – Irrigations can be scheduled in advance to execute at any time of day or night. By shifting to off peak hours, some vintners have saved between 20-30 percent on their energy bills alone.
  • Crop Quality and Yield Improvement – The ability to irrigate faster ahead of heat waves can significantly reduce yield loss. Closing the feedback loop with accurate water usage data and fine-tuning irrigation with greater precision can have a positive impact on fruit quality, estimated at between 3-10 percent.
  • Equipment Maintenance Savings - Lumo helps diagnose performance issues with irrigations systems before they become bigger problems. Being able to analyze irrigation maintenance based on the distribution of water between blocks allows vineyard managers to pinpoint exactly where maintenance efforts need to be focused first.

“Accountable irrigation is about knowing exactly how much water you’re applying to your crops in real time and over time,” Roddick explains. “Growers know irrigation is important; they know they need automation, but they’ve been underserved by tech providers in the industry to date. We’re working really hard to change that.”

Lumo is pleased to announce the reception of its official patent for Lumo One, the world’s first smart irrigation valve. The patent was approved within 60 days of application with no modifications required, a testament to the need for innovation in irrigation automation and the quality of the product Lumo brings to the marketplace.

In addition, Lumo has recently raised $7 million from Active Impact Investments and Fall Line Capital to help fund its ongoing research and development (R&D) projects and to continue expanding its go-to-market efforts.

Until June 30, growers can take advantage of Lumo's try before you buy promotion, which allows new customers to deploy Lumo without having to commit to purchasing hardware until 2025. For more information or to request a demo, go to: https://lumo.ag.
