Making Your Wine More Saleable

There are many, many wineries that consumers may visit throughout the U.S. and Canada (not to mention Europe, South America, South Africa, etc.) so why should wine drinkers or guests visit your winery?

That is a question that each and every person who works in the winery should be able to answer, from the cellar workers to the office staff, from the salespeople to the tasting room staff, and anyone else who is in any way connected to the winery.

Ask your winery employees to provide you with lists of reasons (let’s say 10 to 20 reasons) why consumers should visit your winery. Also, make your own list.

The reasons can have everything or nothing to do with the wines. They may include the features that make your winery stand out or it may be:

  • Beautiful garden
  • Parklike setting
  • An interesting building
  • History of the building
  • History of the winery
  • The history of the generations that have owned the winery
  • Cheerfulness of the tasting room staff
  • Tour of the cellar
  • The fact that the owner/winemaker may be available to greet and talk with guests
  • The quality of the wines (of course)
  • Interesting varietals that guests can not taste at other wineries
  • Great restaurant
  • A beautiful patio where guests can sit, relax and taste wine
  • Unusual way the winery was founded
  • A different type of location
  • The great hospitality the guests receive from everyone connected with the winery.

Think about what makes your winery different or unique from others in the same area. Why does your winery stand out from the crowd of wineries around you? The most important of all the things I have mentioned is how guests are treated. Are they made to feel welcome, interesting, fun, and likable people? Are they complimented on their taste?

Tell me what is different about your winery, I would love to hear it. I can be reached at E@inshortmarketing.com.

 Other Seminars & Training

Staff and management training should be as integral a part of the operation of a successful winery as using the very best grapes and producing top notch wines. Yet, despite its iymportance, it is the component of business operations that is most easily and most often ignored. In fact, it is frequently not recognized as a component of successful business operations at all.

E (as she is known) presents seminars and workshops on a variety of marketing and sales subjects to wineries and winery associations throughout North America. She is a featured speaker at Wineries Unlimited and presents regularly at state and province conferences working across the US and Canada.

In Short was started as a direct marketing company in 1994 and added workshops and seminars to the mix in 1997.  Elizabeth's dynamic and humorous speaking style has made her a popular and busy speaker both in and out of the wine industry.

"In Short Direct Marketing is an essential business tool." - Maureen Hendrikson, Patit Creek Cellars
