For Better Sales, Plan Your Customer Interaction

How much time do you spend planning your approaches to your customers? If you want to be successful, it is important to plan how you are going to sell to your customers.

What do you want your customers to know about your company and your products?

The information you give them should be tailored to the information they need to make the decisions about which of your wines they should buy and how much. Part of that information is the price, but a lot more is learning from your customers what will encourage them to buy your wine. This means you need to ask them questions about their wine-drinking habits because what will make them want to buy your wine is going to make them want to buy from you.

  • Have they bought your wine before, and did they like it?
  • What kind of wines do they like, sweet, dry, red, white, etc?
  • Did one of their friends recommend the winery to you?
  • Were they referred to you by another winery in your area?
  • Do they regularly drink wine at home and with friends?

Once you have the answers to these questions (and other questions you may want to ask of them), tell them about the wine you have. Start with the wines that they mentioned if you carry those varietals or suggest some other wines that are similar if you don’t.

After they taste the first wine ask them how they liked it and listen to their answers. It is important that if they liked it you get more wines that will suit their tastes; while if they were not keen on that particular wine you should ask a few more questions about their likes and dislikes and try them on a different type of wine.

Knowing what your customers want, will ensure that they leave the winery with at least a few bottles of wine and maybe a case.

 Other Seminars & Training

Staff and management training should be as integral a part of the operation of a successful winery as using the very best grapes and producing top notch wines. Yet, despite its iymportance, it is the component of business operations that is most easily and most often ignored. In fact, it is frequently not recognized as a component of successful business operations at all.

E (as she is known) presents seminars and workshops on a variety of marketing and sales subjects to wineries and winery associations throughout North America. She is a featured speaker at Wineries Unlimited and presents regularly at state and province conferences working across the US and Canada.

In Short was started as a direct marketing company in 1994 and added workshops and seminars to the mix in 1997.  Elizabeth's dynamic and humorous speaking style has made her a popular and busy speaker both in and out of the wine industry.
