[Did you know?] Aluminium Closure Accounts for Only 2% of the LCA for Wine
What does LCA mean ?
LCA stands for "lifecycle assessment". It is a multi-criteria methodology used to quantify the environmental impacts associated with the life cycle of a good or service, from the extraction of the product’s raw material to its final disposal after consumption. It provides a full picture of the product's environmental performance.
How does it apply to wine closure, and wine in general?
When it comes to wine, here is how the different stages can be breakdown:
- 34% for others packaging such as glass bottles and labels
- Grape production accounts for 24% of the LCA
- 24% when it comes to winemaking
- 14% for bottling, distribution and retails
- 2% for consumption and storage
And as stated previously, only 2% for an aluminium closure, such as a STELVIN® screwcap, although it doesn’t stop us from always looking to reduce our footprint!
These numbers were collected by Quantis, after a request of the Aluminium Closures Group. It was based on the PEF (Product Environmental Footprint) Methodology and applied relevant impact categories of the PEFCR (Product Environmental Footprint Category Rules) for wine.
