Product Specifications and Options, Quality and Sustainable Production Techniques Emphasized in the Full-Featured Website
Fairfield, CA, USA — Natural cork is good for the earth and great for your wine. This important reminder about the most sustainable and recyclable wine closure is emblazoned across the new website for ACI Cork USA. Features include product specifications and options, order forms for artwork, and Team Member information as well as a look at cork closure production techniques from start-to-finish.
The company meets its goal of protecting the products of its customers by using state of the art technology for production and quality control. Step by step, the website illustrates how ACI Cork USA creates its quality cork products in a section on the production process.
There is no doubt about the sustainability of this natural wine stopper product, and a primer on “Sustainable Product” is included in the production process description which enumerates the eco benefits from harvest to finished cork product. Compliance with ISO and other good manufacturing practices is a hallmark of ACI Cork USA’s products.
Browsing the large number of cork wine stoppers, capsules, and screwcap closures gives customers a sense of the many product options offered by ACI Cork USA. For most products, both traditional and custom sizes are available. Tips on ways to keep corks fresh in winery or distillery or olive-oil processing facilities are a customer service element of the website. Additionally, the wide color selection for capsules (both tin and poly laminate) and screwcaps is vividly depicted. An easy-to-use form for submitting artword specifications can also be accessed via the site.
On the new website, customers can also virtually meet the many ACI Cork USA team members who are responsible for getting their quality products delivered on-time and in spec.
Paso Robles, CA — Wineries search for packaging that not only protects their products’ integrity but also solidly emphasizes convenience and prestige within the category. Villicana Winery’s new grape-based spirits sport ACI synthetic bartops to accomplish these goals.
Consumer response to Villicana Winery’s new grape-based spirits has far exceeded expectations, proprietors Alex and Monica Villicana are happy to report. In just three years, the Paso Robles, Calif., couple has shepherded production of their category-busting RE:FIND Vodka and RE:FIND Gin to 1,500 cases annually, with a leap to 3,000 cases within reach for 2015.
The recently awakened thirst for craft spirits is fueling the popularity of this innovative product line. Made from premium, ripe, red-wine grapes, RE:FIND Vodka and Gin are the result of a process that emphasizes perfection at every step, from the selection of base ingredients to clean fermentation to diligent distillation. In keeping with traditional premium packaging in the spirits category, they chose to use bartop closures from ACI Cork USA.
Winemaker Alex Villicana had more than two decades of winemaking under his belt before he ventured into this wine-related product extension. “These spirits are wonderful in cocktails with fresh ingredients, or simply sipping on their own,” he relates. “They are changing public perceptions of what spirits can be.”
The halo of sustainability conferred by repurposing saignée undoubtedly adds to the growing appeal. Disposing of the excess grape juice in the production of his fine wines has long troubled Villicana. In search of a solution, he bypassed traditional aged brandy in favor of a product that could be released right away. After years of trial and error, in 2011 he hit the sweet spot. The first year’s production used only his own juice, but “incredible” consumer response encouraged him to reach out to other local wineries. Last year he collected 23,000 gallons–the equivalent of 150 tons of farmed grapes-which would otherwise have gone to waste.
As a long-time ACI Cork USA customer, purchasing 45×24 AC-1 natural wine corks for his award-winning estate wines, Villicana turned to his trusted supplier for closures for the new spirits line.
Sold in 375 ml and 750 ml clear glass bottles, RE:FIND Vodka and Gin are closed with ACI bartops with a wood top and a synthetic shank to preserve the taste and character of the clear spirits. Each bottle requires a different bartop diameter (19.5 and 22.5mm), which can make ordering complicated for the craft distiller, but ACI is “very accommodating of our need to place orders in small batches,” Alex Villicana says.
The Villicana Winery and tasting room are located at 2725 Adelaida Road, Paso Robles, CA 93446, (805) 239-9456. For more information on products from Villicana Winery and RE:FIND Distillery, go to www.villicanawinery.com and www.refinddistillery.com

Sales executive brings more than 30 years of experience to closure supplier
Fairfield, CA, USA — Raul Marques is the latest addition to the sales team at ACI CORK USA. Mr. Marques, a native of Portugal’s cork-growing region, has logged more than three decades in the cork business, occupying a progression of sales and management positions and working with winery customers around the globe.
Headquartered in Fairfield, California, ACI CORK USA provides cork and non-cork closures to producers of wine, distilled spirits, vinegars and oils in the US, Canada, and Mexico.
“Raul’s comprehensive knowledge of the industry is a great asset to our company,” comments Armando Andrade, General Manager of ACI CORK USA. “In addition, he shares our commitment to maintaining a premier position in customer service to the wine industry as our market share continues to grow.”
Since beginning his career on the production floor of a cork manufacturer near his home town, Mr. Marques has had a first-hand view of advances in all facets of the business, from forest management to the adoption of sophisticated processing technologies to the location of finishing plants near winemakers to foster frequent and convenient communication.
“Corks nowadays are much more reliable, thanks in large part to the continuous process improvement and rigid quality control practices such as those in place at ACI CORK USA,” he notes. “Today’s wineries enjoy a wide variety of closure options to protect their products and support brand identification initiatives. As a supplier it’s a definite advantage to offer a gamut of cork types, capsules and screw caps, along with the flexibility to meet their unique delivery requirements.
“I’m very pleased to serve our customers throughout California in this new capacity,” Mr. Marques concludes.
ACI CORK USA, headquartered in Fairfield, California USA, provides cork and non-cork closures to producers of wine, distilled spirits, vinegars and oils in the North American market. Corks are sourced from Portuguese companies that use world class technology to produce all-natural cork wine stoppers; other cork-based products sold by ACI CORK USA are the new innovative Nanocork™, several types of “technical” corks produced via agglomeration processes, closures for sparkling wines, and Bartop™ closures. Screwcaps and capsules, included in the ACI CORK USA product line, provide one-stop shopping for any wine closure need. After custom finishing each product to exacting customer specifications in the modern 30,000 sq ft Fairfield CA plant, ACI CORK USA provides closures to more than 600 winemakers in the USA, Canada and Mexico.
New Wines from Healthful Native Varietals and Sweeter Wines - Keep the Familiar "POP" with Natural Cork
Fairfield, CA - The oldest operating winery in Tennessee, Tennessee Valley Winery, upholds tradition while experimenting at the same time. Winemaker John Smook likes to hear the "pop" when he opens a bottle that was closed with natural cork from ACI Cork USA, and those bottles are increasingly filled with heart-healthy Muscadine-based wine.
Muscadine is a Native American grape that has proven to have high antioxidant properties, testing at more than double the desirable phytochemicals found in pomegranate juice, for example. Consumer trends toward foods with antioxidant properties have boosted interest in Tennessee Valley Winery's White Muscadine, Red Muscadine, and Pink Muscadine wines. The sweetness of Muscadine wines appeals to many Midwestern, Southern and East Coast palates. Tennessee Valley Winery vinifies other wines trending toward sweet, like a 100% Concord grape wine called Country Red, a blend of Vidal and Chambourcin called Mountain Blush, and Vidal Blanc.
From its 12 acre vineyard in Loudon, TN, in the foothills of the Smoky Mountains, Tennessee Valley Winery produces an average of 35,000 gallons of wine a year. Of this, all 4000 cases of the winery's Muscadine are topped with ACI Cork USA's AC-4 natural cork, a popular choice of many winemakers. ACI Cork USA offers natural cork in a range of sizes and qualities to fit the operating and marketing needs of North American wineries.
"We plan our production at least one and a half years in advance," said winemaker-owner John Smook. "It's good to know we can get reliable deliveries from ACI Cork USA on a timely basis."

Product Differentiation with High Quality Cork is Key to Marketing Unique Wines
Fairfield, CA – Corks of the highest quality from ACI Cork USA are part of the premier packaging used by many wineries in the growing garagiste movement in North America. The AC-1 HAND SELECT tops bottles of Dubost Ranch wines because “we want the very best for our consumers,” according to Kate Dubost, Co-Owner/General Manager of this Paso Robles winery on California’s Central Coast.
Product differentiation is key to marketing garagiste wines and use of high end corks helps distinguish rare, artisanal, small production wines from the not-so-unique thousands of wines in the North American market.
ACI Cork USA provides natural cork bottle stoppers of all grades. The highest quality corks have little or no porosity, tend to be longer, and are preferred for wines destined for aging. The highest grades are AC1-hs (hand select), AC-1/flor, AC-2/extra, AC-3/super. Other corks in the grading system are designated Primero or Segundo.
HAND SELECT, the highest grade of corks representing the top 1 percent of quality, sell from 45 cents to $1.50 each. Because of their density, they ensure less oxygen ingress and as well as less bottle-to-bottle variation. This is highly important for Dubost Wines, whose most recent vintage of all-estate wines totaled 400 cases. Their flagship wines are their Tempranillo and Syrah.
“We buy the best available cork from ACI Cork USA, and this has paid off for us,” said Kate. “We don’t have a problem with tainted corks and so we have never experienced any losses because of TCA taint in our wines.”
Dubost takes great pride in its packaging so it also invests in good graphics and high quality paper for its labels. The family honors their late son Jacob by having ACI print Jacob’s signature on the corks as well as the Dubost logo.
“We garagiste wineries don’t have the advantage of economies of scale, but our customers value our choices in our viticultural practices and our winemaking. We intend to stay small and friendly,” said Kate. “We rely on word of mouth, and high quality packaging is part of keeping our promise to our consumers.” The family operation is also notable for its straw bale winery and tasting room, situated on the 320-acre Dubost Ranch in the historic Adelaida area west of Paso Robles, California.
