6th Annual WIN Expo Attendee Registration Opens
30 August, 2017

North Coast buying show expands education and Expo Deals

Healdsburg, CA, August 22nd, 2017 – The Wine Industry Network opened registration for the 6th Annual WIN Expo, North Coast Wine Industry Trade Show & Conference, scheduled to take place at the Sonoma County Fairgrounds and Event Center in Santa Rosa, CA, on Thursday, November 30, 2017.

Wine industry professionals from the region and beyond are encouraged to register now for this highly anticipated annual event.  The WIN Expo continues to grow in popularity; in 2016 over 3,600 people from 9 different countries and 36 U.S. states attended, and more are expected this year.

The WIN Expo will include 300+ exhibitors featuring the latest products and services available. Continuing to build on the success of last year’s new Expo Deals program (#ExpoDeals), participating exhibitors will offer one-day, end-of- year specials to attendees. Expo Deals will be promoted in the days leading up to the show so that attendees can plan their purchases before arriving.

“Expo deals are a great way for wineries and exhibitors to take advantage of the slow time of year to do some business. WIN Expo is becoming the ‘buying show’ for the wine industry because our exhibitors come prepared to offer great savings to attendees,” said George Christie, President of Wine Industry Network.

WIN Expo offers comprehensive winemaking and sales & marketing breakout sessions, all of which will focus on current industry issues and trends impacting the North Coast. Speakers include thought leaders and innovators sharing ideas, information, and predictions to help attendees better prepare for the coming year.  This year’s conference sessions will address:

  • Acquisition Impact on the North Coast Grape Market
  • Canned Wine
  • The Pét-Nat Trend
  • The Evolution of Social Media
  • Protein Stability & CMC vs. Traditional Cold Stabilization
  • The Influence of Nutrients on Aromatics
  • Synergistic Action of Enzymes and Tannins in Winemaking
  • Legalization of Cannabis and its Impact on the Wine Industry

“We continue to expand the educational program at the Expo,” adds Christie. “Our attendees want more opportunities to learn about their craft as well as stay current on regional issues. Each year we try to over-deliver on those expectations and make sure that the WIN Expo remains a must attend event for the North Coast Wine Industry.”

Beyond Social Media 101: The Next Frontier
30 August, 2017

Topic Description

As social media continues its journey towards being THE most important channel for customer communications and wine club retention, wineries are working harder than ever to stand out in the sea of content.

We’ve seen the winemaker videos on Facebook, the pictures of a club event on Instagram, the new release announcement on Twitter, but how else is social being leveraged? How are visual platforms such as Pinterest, Instagram and Snapchat being successfully utilized to not just entertain, but inspire purchases? How do you stay in front of the social curve and what’s the next channel you need to be aware of? Because if you’re busy catching up, it means you’re not keeping up.

This session will provide the opportunity to learn from social experts their approach to leveraging the new channels they see trending and how those strategies can be applied to grow your customer base, your brand loyalty and ultimately, sell more wine.

Are Preconceptions Still a Problem for East Coast Wines? Survey Extended
02 May, 2017

Wine Industry Network (WIN) and VinQuest are partnering to gather and analyze direct to consumer sales data from U.S. eastern based wineries. The research will highlight best practices and establish benchmarks for the region’s wine industry to learn from and build on for the future. In an effort to collect as much data from east coast wineries as possible, they have extended the survey deadline to Monday, May 15th.

All East Coast wineries that complete the confidential survey by May 15, 2017 will receive a free copy of the research results (retail value $149).

Preconceptions Still a Problem for East Coast Wines

The quality of wine produced in the Eastern U.S. continues its upward trajectory, but wineries still struggle with consumer perception and their doubts about the quality.

“The hardest thing for East Coast wineries is the general attitude toward their wine,” says Elizabeth Slater of In Short Direct Marketing, who works with wineries across the nation to improve their sales. “People don’t take wine from Virginia, North Carolina, or New Jersey seriously. They have a preconceived notion, just like they used to have about California, where California was ... "

First Direct to Consumer Sales Survey Focused on East Coast Wine Industry Launched

Healdsburg, CA, April 10, 2017 – Wine Industry Network (WIN) and VinQuest are partnering to gather and analyze direct to consumer sales data from U.S. eastern based wineries. The research will highlight best practices and establish benchmarks for the region’s wine industry to learn from and build on for the future.

“Direct to Consumer sales continues to be a winery’s most profitable revenue channel and in many cases, the only channel” says George Christie, President & CEO of Wine Industry Network. “For wineries located on the east coast, this is no exception, but without the tasting room traffic that many California wineries experience, they have to manage the direct channel a little differently. Our goal with this project is to identify what the most successful wineries are doing and share that with the entire region”.

Now in its tenth year, VinQuest has specialized in producing research that measures tasting room, wine club, and online sales to identify the best practices reported by top performing wineries across the country.  These metrics provide a valuable tool for wineries to improve their direct to consumer sales.

“Our ability to provide detailed analysis of survey responses is crucial to wineries looking to better understand their direct to consumer channel,” says Bryan St. Amant, Founder & CEO, VinterActive LLC. “These results help wineries improve their sales and customer service strategies and ultimately their businesses.”

The survey opens April 10, 2017 and all U.S. East Coast wineries that complete the confidential survey by April 30, 2017 will receive a free copy of the research results (retail value $149).

Five Wine Industry Innovators Honored with 2016 WINnovation Awards
07 November, 2016

WINnovationAwardsWhether in solving a problem or seeing an opportunity, these five wine industry suppliers used their ingenuity and knowhow to develop innovative products and solutions for vineyards and wineries.

In some cases these industry suppliers listened to and worked with wineries to develop solutions for the problems faced, in others they have looked to the future and saw opportunities for the industry to prosper and created a new product to reach that vision, but all represent the vanguard of product and service innovation that is essential for the advancement and prosperity of the wine industry.

Wine Industry Network’s fourth annual WINnovation Award winners for excellence in wine industry innovation are:

  • Cork Supply
  • eProvenance
  • Falcon Crop Protection
  • Free Flow Wines
  • O-I Packaging Solutions and Amorim Cork

Below are short introductions to the specific innovations from the winners that merritted their recognition.

DS100+ by Cork Supply

DS100_MachineCork remains the preferred closure of consumers and premium wines, and it is important for wine brands to be able to deliver the high quality experience their customers. Although on the decline, cork taint (TCA) continues to compromise a small percentage of natural cork closures, which is why Cork Supply’s DS100+ 100% TCA-free guarantee is an important advancement.

The DS100+ equipment unveiled earlier this year detects TCA down to 1 part per trillion, far below the human sensory threshold, and the machine automated process makes it faster and more reliable than human sensory detection methods. Cork Supply expects to be processing 60 million corks through the DS100+ system in 2017.

Shipment Monitoring System by eProvenance

eprovenanceWith direct to consumer wine sales on the rise, much of today’s premium wine is shipped across the nation and world, but the winery has little control over how the wine is treated after it leaves the winery, and temperature spikes during shipment can cook the wine, changing its taste and aroma, without damaging the packaging, leaving the consumer with a negative product experience without the winery knowing why.

eProvenance conducted extensive research exposing wines at different temperatures and having professional tasters detect the difference in the taste and aroma of the wine. Tasters noticed that wine had been cooked after the wine had been subjected to as little as 30°C heat (86°F) for a total of just over two days.

The eProvenance monitoring system uses this research in combination with high-tech sensors and a secure, online data platform to monitor and analyze the temperature, humidity and geolocation of shipments at the case, pallet or container level during transport and storage. Their online analytics engine uses proprietary, scientifically based algorithms to determine whether wine is still fresh, or whether the aroma, taste and aging ability may have been compromised.

All this independent third party data is available to the wineries, so they can know if their wine shipment was damaged and work with their shipping company to rectify any problems, file insurance claims, and make sure their customers receive the wine in the condition it was intended.

Falcon Kite by Falcon Crop Protection

falcon-kiteLoss of grapes due to bird damage can be a nuisance as well as costly to vineyards, and effective protection like vine netting also come with a high price tag, but the ingenious Falcon Kite from Falcon Crop Protection is both effective, test results show 95%-100% repulsion of pest birds, and cost-effective. One Falcon Kite can protect more than an acre of vineyards and last several seasons.

The Falcon Kite is designed to look and move like a Peregrine Falcon; suspended between poles the kite needs very little wind (2 miles per hour) to self-launch and move randomly like a predator, which makes the kite indistinguishable from the a real falcon to other birds and continues to scare them away.

Sparkling Wine Kegs by Free Flow Wines

Free Flow Wines CompanyFree Flow Wines has been the standard bearer for wine on tap and the promise not only to deliver a quality by the glass wine experience, but also make it more sustainable with reduced packaging and carbon footprint. With the rising popularity of sparkling wines and the category’s particular challenges for delivering an optimal by the glass experience, Free Flow Wines’ work to create a sparkling keg program for wineries deserve recognition.

Free Flow Wines uses a state of the art in-line carbonation system rather than the more traditional charmat method and has also developed a set of draft dispense protocols for restaurant operators to ensure a perfect pour every time, with no foam and plenty of sparkle. Their 100% reusable stainless steel kegs not only preserve wine quality and carbonation levels, but also help to reduce the environmental footprint of wines served by the glass.

Helix by O-I Packaging Solutions and Amorim Cork

HELIXMost consumers prefer cork, but they also love the convenience of screw top closures; with Helix they can have both. Like many great ideas, it sounds simple, but it took two leading wine packaging companies years of research and development to perfect a closure that could combine the quality seal and pop of cork with the twist off convenience of screw tops.

The grooved Amorim cork and matching O-I threaded bottleneck come together to create the innovative Helix packaging, and American wine consumers can now experience the Helix for the first time with Bronco Wine Company’s Red Truck brand.

USBevX announces Media Sponsors WINE & SPIRITS MAGAZINE and BEVERAGE MEDIA GROUP
29 January, 2016

US Beverage Industry Expo, (USBevX), the conference that will take on the topic of the “new normal” in the alcohol beverage industry, recently announced Wine & Spirits Magazine and Beverage Media Group as the conference’s media sponsors.

“Having two of the most reputable industry publications support USBevX, with their cross-category coverage and audience reach, allows us to share our topic of the ‘new normal’ in alcohol beverages with key trade and interested consumers,” notes George Christie, President and CEO of US Beverage Industry Expo and Wine Industry Network.

Founded in 1982, Wine & Spirits is published eight times a year and read by over 200,000 members of America’s wine community. Consumers and wine professionals read the magazine for information on established and up-and-coming regions and producers, the art and science of viticulture, industry happenings and food and wine pairing. Wine & Spirits, the only wine publication to win the James Beard award five times for excellence in wine writing, evaluates more than 13,000 bottlings every year.

Beverage Media Group publications combine timely, in-depth national and local editorial coverage with brand and price listings from distributors. Reaching 33 markets and almost 90,000 on- and off-premise trade members combined, the publications provide a unique “local advantage” and give suppliers and distributors the opportunity to target their key customers.

USBevX will gather beverage producers, thought leaders and policymakers from the Beer, Cider, Spirits and Wine categories to establish a cross-industry dialogue designed to chart a course for success in the “new normal” of the rapidly evolving beverage alcohol industry.

Disruption in the industry, fueled by the explosion of new brands, new business models and new producers, are the drivers of the conference agenda. From a deep dive into the data that highlights the blurring of the lines between the categories, to how breaking the rules and challenging status quo has benefited some of the most successful emerging beverage brands, USBevX promises to be a provocative and insightful foray into how producers should think about their business.

Speakers include wine media personality and star of Check Please! Bay Area television show, Leslie Sbrocco; Legal Sea Foods VP of Beverages, Sandy Block; Global Beverage Buyer of Whole Foods, Doug Bell; Tuthilltown Spirits Founder, Ralph Erenzo; Founder and CEO of Virtue Cider, Gregory Hall; author and Partner at EatBigFish, Mark Barden; President for Nielsen CGA, Jon Collins; Founder and CEO of Demeter Group, Jeff Menashe; Founder and Partner of Hinman & Carmichael Law Group, John Hinman; Executive Director of the California Craft Brewers Association, Tom McCormick; President & CEO of Pavone Marketing Group, Michael Pavone; President of Bevology, Steve Raye, and many more industry experts all prepared to share their knowledge.

The format for USBevX is interactive, with a blend of keynote and plenary sessions followed by in-depth workshops, with ample time devoted to Q & A and networking opportunities.

Wine Industry Network Partners with Consumer Wine Awards to Advance Wine Diversity
20 February, 2015

Feb. 20, 2015, Healdsburg, CA - “The Consumer Wine Awards is a unique blend of consumer-centric wine competition and research project,” says George Christie, President of Wine Industry Network (WIN). “It challenges the traditional approach of wine judging and opens untapped marketing opportunities for wine producers.”

Entering its 7th year, the Consumer Wine Awards (CWA) is moving to Sacramento, CA, and the evaluation will take place on April 11th. Christie will join the CWA advisory board along with famed wine expert Darrell Corti, Sacramento Convention & Visitor’s Bureau and Visit Sacramento CEO, Michael Testa, chef Michael Tuohy, and social media expert, Christine Hinckly Trice.

“The mission of the Consumer Wine Awards is to offer a peer-to-peer recommendation alternative to the ‘expert opinions’ that are so often out of sync with wine lover preferences,” says Tim Hanni MW, co-founding partner of CWA. “When judged by everyday wine lovers, wines from every state - representing every imaginable flavor and style - win awards. These are the wines that trained experts and critics ignore or dismiss, but our program offers a great means to rise above the ‘tyranny of the minority’ that focuses on a tiny number of wine regions and styles.”

Approximately 200 consumers will be “Wine Judges for a Day” evaluating 800-1,000 wines. The diversity of wines, representing every imaginable style and flavor category, are submitted from all over the US and abroad. The panels of Consumer Evaluators are grouped based on their wine preferences so that each panel judges the type of wine they enjoy and purchase. This year, the addition of seminars during the event day will provide an additional draw those who wish to participate.

As part of a new partnership with the Sacramento Convention & Visitor’s Bureau, 4,000 wine loving consumers are expected to attend the Awards Ceremony, being held on June 6th during the Grape Escape and CWA Awards.  Nearly 100 wineries will be pouring and showcasing CWA award winning wines.

“Innovation in the wine industry continues to help reach new consumers,” says Christie. “We will work with the CWA team on their consumer research projects to communicate the valuable data they collect and explain what it means to the wine industry.”

The Consumer Wine Awards are now open for wine submissions and consumer “Wine Judge for a Day” applications. Visit www.consumerwineawards.com for more details, contact Tim Hanni MW, tim@timhanni.com or (707)337-0327.

About the Wine Industry Network (WIN)

Based in Healdsburg, California, WineIndustryNetwork.com is the wine industry’s most comprehensive business resource websites operating as an on-line trade show and created specifically to help industry professionals locate and connect more easily with the industry’s best suppliers and service professionals. WIN also produces The North Coast Wine Industry Expo www.wineindustryexpo.com, based in Santa Rosa, California, and the online industry publication, the Wine Industry Advisor (wineindustryadvisor.com).

About the Consumer Wine Awards (CWA)

The mission of the Consumer Wine Awards is celebrating the diversity of both the wines of the world and the diversity of the people who love wine. The CWA premise is that there is often an inverse relationship between the wines favored by trained wine experts and wine judges in traditional competitions and the wines that are cherished and sought after by every-day wine lovers. The CWA format was created by Master of Wine and sensory specialist Tim Hanni MW, G.M “Pooch” Pucilowski, who ran the California State Wine competition for 25 years, and Aaron Kidder, proprietor of Kidder Family Winery and also a software and IT specialist. Chris Cutler, a technology, wine marketing and social media specialist, joined the team in 2014. The Consumer Wine Awards also provides a foundation for conducting formal wine consumer research projects that are at the core of both their methods for assessing the wine as well as creating innovative ways to segment the wine market and promote wine enjoyment on a personal level.

Top 10 Wine Industry Searches in 2014
23 January, 2015

WIN_Search-Ad-300x200There are three newcomers on this year’s list of top ten searches from the Wine Industry Network’s annual search report. The report provides a view into what products and services wineries most often go online to search for.

New on this year’s top ten list are Barrel Alternatives in sixth place, eCommerce in 8th, andCorks in ninth. While search for Barrels remains strong holding its second overall position from last year, the emergence of Barrel Alternatives on the list suggests that more wineries are beginning to look for new ways to impart oak flavors in their wines without paying a premium for new oak barrels.

eCommerce should come as no surprise on the list. With the continued growth of direct to consumer wine sales, wineries need to either add or upgrade their online selling portal to satisfy the increased demand for mobile friendly design.

Top 10 Wine Industry Network Searches in 2014

  1. Bottles
  2. Barrels
  3. Winery Equipment
  4. Labels
  5. Packaging
  6. Barrel Alternatives
  7. Tanks
  8. eCommerce
  9. Corks
  10. Filtration

In 2014 the Wine Industry Network also saw a 19% increase in search volume over 2013.

“Word of mouth, trade shows, and references from your neighbor will always be an important part of any buying decision in the wine industry,” says George Christie, president of Wine Industry Network, “but now, people expect to be able to find information about the products and services they need online. Today’s wine business professional knows that it’s not enough to just do what your neighbor does or even do what you’ve always done. If you want to succeed, you have to know what options are available so you can make better buying decisions, and for that, the internet is the world’s tool of choice.”

“Online research won’t completely erode the old way of finding what you need, but it does open the door for new suppliers with innovative products to present themselves at a price they can afford. For established suppliers, having an online presence is a no brainer, they have to be there and they usually are.”

The Wine Industry Network expects to see the increased search volume trend redouble in 2015, and is enhancing their wine industry search options in response to the demand.

“We’re now offering the network suppliers the opportunity to list the products and services they supply to the wine industry on the site, and wine business professions can come search the growing inventory,” says Christie, “it means more information, more options, and more innovation, it’s a win-win for buyers and suppliers, and the industry as a whole.”

New US Beverage Industry Expo Launched
08 December, 2014

Event Focused Exclusively on Craft Beer, Cider, Spirits & Wine

USbevX CapitolLast April, the Wine Industry Network (WIN) announced the launch of a new, Washington, D.C. based event aptly named, the U.S. Beverage Industry Expo (USBevX). This unique trade show and conference is focused exclusively on the Craft Beer, Cider, Spirits, and Wine industries and will highlight the newest and most innovative products and services currently available. From an educational perspective, the conference will focus on the future of the industry and how to harness the latest technology and best practices needed to thrive in the years ahead.

“Our goal is to develop a world class, innovative business event for the beverage industry,” says George Christie, President of Wine Industry Network. “Technology is changing the marketplace at a pace that’s nearly impossible to keep up with, and we aim to make it a little easier for producers by bringing the best and brightest to present at this show.”

USBevX will take place February 16-18, 2016 at the Wardman Park Marriott in Washington, D.C. “We chose Washington, D.C. because travel is easy with many direct flights, it’s essentially neutral ground and will never be confused with being a regional or state show, and most importantly, it’s a place that embodies the American dream, which is what every one of the attending producers are chasing,” adds Christie. “It’s the perfect location. The entire city is essentially a testament to overcoming what initially may have appeared to be insurmountable obstacles, which is something that every successful winemaker, brewer, distiller, and cider maker can relate to.”

The inaugural event will accommodate more than 300 exhibitors and 3,000 total attendees. Educational sessions will focus primarily on marketing, finance, and sales. “We’re assuming that if you’re attending, you already know how to make a good product, that’s a given,” says Christie. “Any producer will tell you that making it isn’t the hardest part…it’s what you do after it’s in the bottle that determines if you succeed or not. Our goal is to make sure you leave with the tools that make success a reality.”

Christie adds, “Nowhere in North America are these four industries growing faster than throughout the East Coast and the Midwest, and although the specific products are different, there’s a ton of common ground. They share the same suppliers and in many cases, especially with regard to government regulations, the same challenges. They also share one more thing, a creative passion to produce the best products in the world, and we’re incredibly proud to support that.”

For suppliers interested in exhibiting, a notification list is available to join at www.USBevExpo.com – booth sales open on Wednesday December 10.

5 Wine Industry Innovators Honored with WINnovation Award
21 November, 2014

WINnovationAward_LoResThe business of wine is in a continual state of evolution with new markets, new consumer trends, new challenges and new solutions provided from the businesses trying to capture, shape or overcome them. The WINnovation Awards, sponsored by the Wine Industry Network (WIN), highlight those companies that have met this challenge by developing innovative products or services that contribute to the advancement of the North American wine industry.

WINnovation Award Winners 2014

  • Biofiltro USA
  • G3 Enterprises
  • Nomacorc
  • Øeno Vaults
  • Sonoma State University’s Wine Business Institute

The WINnovation Award Winners will be honored along with the North Bay Business Journal Wine Industry Award winners December 2nd  at the Hyatt Vineyard Creek Hotel in Santa Rosa. The event will kick-off a week-long industry celebration that culminates with the 3rd Annual North Coast Wine Industry Expo, held at the Santa Rosa Fairgrounds on Dec 4th, 2014.

“Here at WIN, we have the privilege of seeing the newest products and services on a regular basis and I’m continually impressed by the level of innovation,” says George Christie, Wine Industry Network President. “In many cases, industry suppliers are the change agents that help winery and vineyard operations positively impact quality or improve efficiencies. The WINnovation awards are a way for us to acknowledge the efforts of these suppliers and their contribution to the wine industry.”

BioFiltro

BioFiltro Water Jars

Wastewater before and after BioFiltro treatment

BioFiltro is a wastewater system originally developed in Chile, but recently introduced to the North American market. The system works by releasing wastewater into the BioFiltro where the earthworms reside in a layer of wood shavings. The worms eat the organic matter trapped by the shavings and produce castings with bacteria that break down dissolved contaminants in the water. The whole process takes about 4 hours for the waste water to be converted into water available for irrigation of vineyards.

Constellation’s winery in Madera is currently running a 6 month trial of the system. “The BioFiltro team is very innovative and understands the variability of winery operations, which has made our partnership thus far very productive,” says Wendy Garcia, Manager of Environmental Engineering Services for Constellation.

“With the growing demand for sustainable practices and the challenges that the drought presents for the wine industry in California,” says Christie, “BioFiltro’s system is an excellent example of innovation that benefits the industry.”

G3 Enterprises

Rainy Day Label

Thermochromic label design

The WINnovation Award was presented to G3 Enterprises for their ingenuity and technical achievement in developing the G-Ink, which unleashes a new realm of creative possibilities for packaging designers to make impactful designs.

The G-Ink features both Bichromic and Thermochromic capabilities, which means that it can change appearance depending on viewing angle or package temperature. This gives the bottle’s added dimension and engages the consumer.

“In today’s competitive wine market, a quality product is not enough for success,” say Christie, “you need to stand out and G-Ink provides wineries a creative tool that adds value and shelf appeal to their packaging and brand. G3 has created the opportunity to carve out a marketing niche, now it’s up to the individual winery to seize that opportunity and write their own success story.”

Nomacorc

Nomacor Bio SelectNomacorc is a leader in synthetic wine closures and oxygen management with the Select Series of closures, but with their new Bio Select, they’ve taken the extra step allowing winemakers to address the dual concern of creating a quality product and sustainable operations.

Bio Select is the world’s first zero carbon footprint wine closure. It is made using renewable, plant-based biopolymers derived from sugar cane and is fully recyclable. Sonoma County-based Avalon Winery is the first United States winery to use Nomacorc’s Bio Select for their flagship California CAB.

“We’ve striven to minimize our carbon footprint in all that we do – in the winery, in the vineyard and in our community,” says Lisa Ehrlich, Executive Vice President, Marketing of Purple Wine Company. “Our next step was to implement sustainable solutions and practices into our packaging. Nomacorc’s Select Bio closure is a perfect choice for our California CAB as it combines quality performance and environmental benefits.”

Nomacorc deserves recognition for their achievement in addressing multiple concerns,” says Christie, “with their Bio Select they deliver to the consumer the traditional experience of pulling a cork, to the winemaker, oxygen transfer control and protection from cork taint, and they answer the market demand for sustainable solutions.”

Øeno Vaults

FLUX by Øeno Vaults is an innovative service that exists in the space between the winery and the consumer and adds benefits to both. For the consumer it provides a flexible means to manage, store, and ship their wines, and for a winery, the service and flexibility offered to its customers has the potential to increase both sales and retention.

Øeno Vaults ‘s cellar inventory management tool is available online and through a sleek mobile app that allows you to schedule free pickup of your wine club shipment at local wineries and easy shipping of your wines internationally and to most U.S. States.

“Multistate shipping and compliance issues continue to be a challenge for wineries selling their wines direct to consumer,” says Christie, “FLUX is an opportunity for wineries to overcome some of those challenges and offer the highest level of service to their best clients that can boost customer satisfaction, wine club retention, and the winery’s bottom line.”

Sonoma State University’s Wine Business Institute

Sonoma State University’s Wine Business Institute continues to expand its offerings in partnership with the local wine industry. It was the first university in the nation to offer an undergraduate BA, MBA, and Executive MBA focused exclusively on wine business, and continues to cooperate with local experts to provide the highest caliber of education in wine business.

“The Wine Business Institute has made great strides to be the leader in wine education and research in the North Bay. They have worked with the community and businesses to create one of the most innovative wine programs in the world,” says Brian Shapiro, Direct to Consumer Manager at Stryker Sonoma.

“The business of wine continues to evolve,” says Christie, “and it’s great to see an educational institution not just keeping up with new trends, but leading the way and making sure that our local wine businesses are equipped with talent ready to tackle the new challenges and be leaders in the wine industry going forward.”

To learn more about the latest wine industry innovations, visit the North Coast Wine Industry Expo on December 4, 2014 at the Sonoma County Fairgrounds. WINnovation Award winners BioFiltro, G3 Enterprises, Øeno Vaults, and the Wine Business Institute will be exhibiting along with 300 other wine industry suppliers, including the North Bay Business Journal Wine Industry Award winners Maverick EnterprisesMonvera Glass DécorAll American Containers, and Portocork America.

WIN Partnering with NBBJ for Inaugural Wine Industry Awards
16 September, 2013

We have some very exciting news to share!

Nearly a year ago, I met with Ken Clark (Founder) and Brad Bollinger (Editor in Chief), for the North Bay Business Journal, to discuss how we could collaborate to expand the North Coast Wine Industry Expo from a one day trade show to a week-long wine industry celebration.

One idea we specifically focused on is a program that recognizes leadership from the wineries, vineyards as well as the industry suppliers. At the time, I also shared my observations with regard to the level of innovation occurring in the industry and the role that the suppliers and service professional play in that process.

The result was an announcement this week for the North Bay Business Journal’s Inaugural 2013 Wine Industry Awards ( Wine Industry Awards article ).

The program consists of three major categories, Individual Awards, Supplier Awards and the Wine Industry Network sponsored WINnovation Awards, celebrating innovative advancements in Wine Production, Vineyard Operations and Sales & Marketing.

I encourage everyone to review the categories and criteria and submit your company for consideration. There is an awards ceremony scheduled for Tuesday, December 3rd in Santa Rosa and a major initiative for us to highlight all of the winners at our 2nd Annual North Coast Wine Industry Expo later that week.

Go Here To Register: Wine Industry Awards Registration

Here at the Wine Industry Network, we have the luxury of seeing the latest products and services on a regular basis, and we are proud to be a part of a program that identifies and recognizes the thought leaders in our industry.

Good luck to everyone and please contact us if you have any questions.

Thank you,

George Christie

Vineyard & Winery Management Appoints George Christie as CEO
28 August, 2012

Founder and President of Wine Industry Network Will Continue to Operate WIN

Santa Rosa, CA – Robert Merletti, Owner and Chairman of Vineyard & Winery Management, has announced that George Christie, Founder and President of Wine Industry Network, will join Vineyard & Winery Management as Chief Executive Officer. In addition to his new role, Christie will continue to operate Wine Industry Network and will explore opportunities in which the two businesses can work together.

As CEO, Christie will oversee all aspects of the Vineyard & Winery Management business, including its online presence, print publication, advertising and circulation, wine competitions, trade shows and conferences. He will also work closely with Editor-in-Chief Tina Caputo on editorial content. Christie’s experience in managing sales, marketing and business development functions in the wine industry will provide V&WM with the knowledge, experience and leadership necessary to expand its established publishing, event management and wine competition businesses.

Merletti, who will continue to take an active role in the strategic direction of V&WM, welcomes the addition of Christie’s expertise and talent and sees this as a mutually beneficial business opportunity as the two businesses work closely together. “The way to market and support suppliers today is very different than it was in the past. There is no one with a better understanding of this than George,” said Merletti. “He’s a wine industry veteran, a proven leader and marketing expert who will advance the growth of Vineyard & Winery Management.”

While this is not a merger of V&WM and WIN, the alliance is a positive for industry suppliers, who will benefit from added exposure and expertise both in print and online.

“Vineyard & Winery Management is a lot like many of the wineries I’ve worked with over the years,” Christie stated. “They’re family owned, committed to their customers and not afraid to make the changes necessary to ensure they’ll be here for another 40 years. I’m excited to be a part of it.”

Vineyard & Winery Management’s expertise in producing industry events will provide valuable resources that will ensure the success of Wine Industry Network’s first trade show, the North Coast Wine Industry Expo, to be held Dec. 5 in Santa Rosa, Calif.

New Wine Industry Trade Event to Focus on North Coast
06 August, 2012

The Wine Industry Network (WIN) announced the launch of a new trade event, the North Coast Wine Industry Expo, scheduled for December 5, 2012 at the Sonoma County Fairgrounds in Santa Rosa, CA.

“Over the last two years we’ve been approached countless times by vineyard and winery owners and local associations, about the need for a regional trade show,” says George Christie, President of WIN. “We believe that this area is absolutely ready to support an event of this caliber… the North Coast deserves a show of its own. Based on the overwhelming interest we’ve already received, we’re expecting the event to sell out…an amazing accomplishment for the first year.”

The North Coast Expo will include a one-day trade show featuring 200 of the industry’s best suppliers along with panel discussions focusing on Sales, Marketing, Production and Vineyard operations. The theme for the show is “2013…Plan for Success”. Topics will focus on latest trends in the industry and exhibitors will be showcasing new products and services that will become available in the upcoming year.

December is typically the slowest time of the year for winery and vineyard operations. The grapes have been harvested, most wines have gone through fermentation, and visitors to the area slow down. It’s a time when decision makers plan for the upcoming year. The show’s number one objective is to help make the planning process that much easier.

“Timing for the event is perfect for winery and vineyard operation looking for a leg up in 2013,” says Christie. “Our goal is to give industry buyers the chance to see what’s new to the market and in some cases, take advantage of special pricing from suppliers looking to finish off the year strong with sales in December. It’s a win-win for everyone involved.”

Booth applications are now being accepted and can be accessed at www.wineindustryexpo.com or by calling 707-433-2557 ext 100. Conference topics and speakers will be announced on August 15th.

Wine Industry Network Continues Rapid Growth
31 May, 2012

WIN expands direct marketing network to 300+ supplier members.

The Wine Industry Network (WIN), today announced that their supplier membership surpassed the three hundred member mark and has increased monthly since launching just over two years ago. This milestone is a major validation of WIN’s direct marketing model and continues to confirm that there is shift in the way that wine industry buyers now research new products and services.

“It’s no secret that people in every industry are relying on the internet more than ever to make better informed buying decisions,” said George Christie, President of WIN. “Our goal is to provide the best marketing platform possible so that the suppliers we represent can take full advantage of that trend.”

WIN’s supplier members continue to benefit from the expanding creative suite of direct marketing services that include targeted email campaigns, video marketing & production services, social media marketing, the most comprehensive directory of industry supplies and services, and a database of over 25,000 wine industry subscribers.

“While we’re very proud of what we’ve accomplished, we never stop trying to improve. Technology is in a constant state of change and that’s a mindset we’ve embraced here at WIN,” said Christie. “Our mission is to provide more value to the suppliers we support and find better ways to help winery and vineyard owners make the best informed buying decisions possible.”

Christie credits the early success of WIN to their focused approach to supporting their members and expects to be closing in on five hundred by this time next year. “Our goal is not to sell subscriptions or advertising, it is to sell the industry suppliers we represent. That’s what makes this different…and we’re just getting started.”

Help end the Tyranny of the Minority and sell more wine!
14 February, 2011

CONSUMER WINE AWARDS AT LODI: Are you sick and tired of the arrogant and ignorant attitude towards wines from your state from the geeks and ‘wine cognoscenti’?You know how much consumers love your wines when they are in your tasting room or at an event. So how do you get the word out to a larger, nationwide audience? Enter your wines in the Consumer Wine Awards at Lodi and help us build a better way to promote ALL wines, every style, from every state in the US.

The Consumer Wine Awards at Lodi, OPEN TO WINES FROM ALL AROUND THE WORLD, uses a unique system to enable everyday consumers to evaluate YOUR wines and award the ones they love the most. Help us end the “tyranny of the minority”: the handful of wine experts who focus solely on wines from only 3 states and ignore the myriad great wines from around the country.

Consumer Wine Awards Open for Winery Submissions
Unique wine competition allows wineries to have their wines rated by consumers Deadline to Enter Competition is February 24, 2011. SEND YOUR WINES THIS WEEK!

Lodi, California (February 8, 2011): The Consumer Wine Awards announced today that it is now open to wine submissions from wineries around the world seeking to have their wines entered into the completion and evaluated directly by wine consumers. “This awards program has triple benefits for wineries”, notes competition co-director, Tim Hanni MW. “ Their wines will be given awards by everyday consumers who love the styles of wine they evaluate. A second return is that we have a Wine-By-the-Glass program with hotels and restaurants that will feature a range of award-winning wines. Finally, wineries who submit will receive a copy of our annual, comprehensive Wine Consumer Preference Report based upon competition results that reveals what the average wine drinker prefers.” A free summary copy of the 2010 Report can be downloaded at www.consumerwineawards.com.

“The Consumer Wine Awards is unlike any other large, organized wine competition” says G.M. “Pooch” Pucilowski, co-director of the awards. “Consumer judges for this competition are everyday people and their only prerequisite is that they like wine. Judges will be asked to evaluate those varietals/styles they enjoy and will not be trained or told what to look for in a particular wine.” Prior to the evaluation of the wines, consumer judges will undergo a battery of food and beverage preferences in order to assess their taste sensitivity. “This year we will be taking a large number of participants through a series of high level taste and smell discrimination tests with Osmic Enterprises - a world leader in developing tests for assessing the chemoreceptive senses of smell and taste. Thus, the information provided in the final Consumer Preferences Report can be used by the wineries to better understand the drivers for gaining new consumers in the marketplace. "It's a definitive win-win-win for consumers and the wineries," Hanni said.

“This unique competition was conceived by Lodi-Tokay Rotary Club as an international service project to promote the community and wine industry,” said J. Mark Hamilton, president-elect of the club “and will be held for the fourth year in Lodi on March 19 and 20.”
Wineries desiring to enter the Consumer Wine Awards should visit www.consumerwineawards.com to download the submission forms and handbook.

Deadline to enter is February 24, 2011. Winners will be announced March 25th, 2011 with an Awards ceremony held on May 6. You will be credited as the article’s author with name and company logo as well as a link to your website or Wine Industry Network profile.
