Wollersheim Wins Big at International Eastern Wine Competition
23 April, 2012

Focus Was on Wineries from East and Midwest

Santa Rosa, CA – The Vineyard & Winery Management Group has announced the results of the 36th Annual International Eastern Wine Competition and Riesling Championship (IEWC), including the Best of Show winner – Wollersheim Winery American Dry Riesling from Wisconsin.

More than 800 wines were entered in the competition, which this year was reorganized into a truly regional event. Entries were restricted to wineries located in the Eastern and Midwestern United States and Eastern Canada, thus giving a voice to producers in the East.

“It was time for IEWC to return to its roots and concentrate on wines made in the ‘other 47’ states and eastern Canada,” said IEWC chief judge Linda Murphy. “The quality of wines from the East and Midwest has increased tremendously in the last decade, as has the number of wineries producing them. Under the new format, 13 states and Ontario were represented in the Sweepstakes round, which clearly shows that well-made, exciting wines come from outside California, Oregon and Washington – and consumers everywhere should know about them.”

“I was very pleased with the results of IEWC in regard to its defined geographical location, which truly focused on the Eastern section of the United States,” stated Bill Traverso, Director of Wine Competitions for Vineyard & Winery Management. “We provided wineries from the Eastern regions an opportunity to showcase their distinct varietals and wines, which sometimes go unnoticed in the world of wine.”

After tasting the wines in Riedel glassware, judges from across the United States awarded 15 double-gold, 73 gold, 216 silver and 235 bronze medals. In addition to winning Best of Show for its Dry Riesling, Wollersheim Winery in Prairie du Sac, Wisconsin, earned Best Rosé for its 2011 Prairie Blush, made from Marechal Foch grapes.

Magnotta Winery’s 2010 Limited Edition Shiraz from Ontario was named Best Red Wine, Grand Mark from Tabor Hill Winery (Michigan) was chosen Best Sparkling Wine, Mazza Vineyards in Pennsylvania won Best Dessert Wine for its 2010 Vidal Blanc Ice Wine, and Wisconsin’s Door Peninsula Winery won Best Fruit Wine for its Peach bottling.

Entries Now Being Accepted for 2012 NextGen Wine Competition

Early Bird Discount Will Save Entrants $10 Per Wine

Santa Rosa, CA – The Vineyard & Winery Management Group has announced entries are now being accepted for the 4th annual NextGen Wine Competition for Millennial Wine Drinkers. The competition was designed specifically with this exciting and important consumer group in mind, and will be judged by qualified and knowledgeable wine industry millennials aged 21-35.

Produced by Vineyard & Winery Management, NextGen is one of the fastest growing and most exciting wine competitions in North America today. “Millennials are today’s wine consumers, not tomorrow’s potential customers. They are taking the nation by storm in determining new ways to communicate, interact, and determine their own distinctive taste and style,” says Giovanni “Gio” Balistreri, Chief Judge. “Through social media, clubs, consumer tastings, and other social outlets, millennials are making their opinions known.”

The regular entry fee is $75 per wine, with a registration deadline of May 8. With the early bird discount, wineries can save $10 per wine if they enter by April 18. All wines must be received by May 17. The competition is open to all commercial grape and fruit wines and fruit distilled spirits produced and marketed in the U.S. and abroad, and will take place June 4-6, 2012.

An official entry consists of four (4) 750 ml bottles or six (6) 375 ml bottles plus a $75.00 per wine entry fee. For complete rules, necessary forms, and a list of judges, please visit

Circulation shows significant increase despite publishing industry struggles
19 March, 2012

Despite the recent troubles experienced by the print publishing industry, newly published circulation figures indicate that Vineyard & Winery Management magazine is showing strong growth in its readership.

According to figures reported in the U.S. Postal Service Statement of Ownership, published in November 2011, the industry trade magazine’s paid circulation reached 6,088 subscribers at the end of the end of last year. The figure represents an 8% increase in paid readership during 2011, making Vineyard & Winery Management the circulation leader among U.S. wine trade magazines. (Wine Business Monthly had 6,016 paid subscribers and Wines & Vines had 3,449 paid subscribers, according to USPS Statement of Ownership figures.) Over the last three years, Vineyard & Winery Management’s paid circulation has experienced double-digit growth.

“We’ve seen a lot of high-profile magazines fold in the last few years due to declining readership,” says COO and General Manager Dennis Black. “However, our readership has shown a consistent increase due to the increasingly high standard of our magazine’s editorial content and design.”

First published in 1975, the bi-monthly publication is available in both print and digital formats.

During 2011, KJ purchased 30 million kilowatt hours of renewable energy certificates (RECs), equal to 130% of the company’s annual electricity usage. KJ also purchased RECs on behalf of its more than 1,000 employees’ annual home power usage.

PASSAGES

UC Davis Emeritus Professor Ralph Kunkee

Ralph Kunkee, Professor Emeritus of Enology at the University of California at Davis, passed away on Nov. 12, 2011 from complications due to cancer. Kunkee joined the department in the early 1960s and taught there until his retirement in 1991. His major research and teaching interests concerned wine yeast, malolactic fermentation and the sources and controls of microbiological spoilages of wines. Data from his wine yeast studies are now standard winemaking tools in the global wine industry. Kunkee’s work on malolactic fermentation helped bring understanding to this bacterial activity, and how to control it. These research efforts resulted in the publication of nearly 150 scientific articles, as well as two enological texts.

Did You Know?

Did You Know?

This show is in its 27th year.  2012 will be our second year in St. Charles, MO.  In the 25 years prior to this year, Midwest Grape & Wine Conference took place at the Lake of Ozark, MO.  This is the largest vineyard and winery trade show, outside of California and Virginia, in North America.

We will have over 170 exhibitors at the show.  Last year, we had a little over 800 attendees, double from the previous year.  The thing to keep in mind is that this show, unlike the Unified show, is a show in which over 80% of the attendees are the decision makers at vineyard and wineries.  Many of these attendees come to our show ready to place orders.

We have received tremendous support from not only Missouri, but all the surrounding states as well.  Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri and Oklahoma endorsed us for 2012 along with several Universities, with enthusiasm!  We actually have attendees from 20 plus statesthat will join us.  Attendees as far away as Michigan are planning to attend as a group to make the distance.

Midwest Grape & Wine Conference - Trade Show is a rapidly expanding vineyard & winery trade show with a potential new, as well as a very established audience that you could be reaching. This show will be taking place once again in St. Charles, MO February 10-11, 2012.   Even though the show is now going into its 27th year, 2011 was our first year in St. Charles, MO and proved to be a tremendous year for the show.  The wine industry, as you know, is booming in the Midwest.

According to Winedex®, there are

  • 100 + wineries in Missouri
  • 80+ wineries in Michigan
  • 80+ wineries in Iowa
  • 60+ wineries in Indiana
  • 60+ wineries in Kentucky

Not to mention the thousands of acres of grapes produced by vineyard owners!

These markets and many more are served by Midwest Grape & Wine Conference - the Largest wine industry trade show in the midwest US with the most experience in delivering a quality event with proven trade show sales.  This is the best opportunity to sell to a viable group of people that will BUY!

Feel free to call or e-mail me with any questions you may have.

Vineyard & Winery Management magazine owns and operates five prestigious wine competitions:  Grand Harvest Awards, West Coast Wine Competition, Int'l Eastern Wine Competition, NextGen Wine Competition for Millenial Wine Drinkers, and International Women's Wine Competition.

Grand Harvest Awards (GHA)

What sets the Grand Harvest Awards apart from the rest? One word…terroir. This judging is unlike any other wine competition as it gives the industry a chance to bring together entries according to regional classification. A medal in this wine competition not only gives winning wines prestige and selling power, it adds retail room talking points. Beyond the determination of medals, the Grand Harvest Awards affords its winners a unique selling proposition- its terroir ranked against its competitors. GHA recognizes wine entries that best exemplify the terroir of their respective viticultural areas and acknowledges its influence on wine quality. Favorable awards support increased local and regional sales. A win in Grand Harvest can put medal-winners into a whole new sales category.

Established in 1990, this is the only wine judging based on the terroir of the product, affording a better way to both learn about and market the value of the wine. Twenty-four judges evaluated over 1,400 entries and awarded a total of 1,027 medals including 141 gold, 426 silver, and 461 bronze. Garnering medals at the Grand Harvest Awards has traditionally been difficult to achieve because of its high standards of excellence. Wine competitions are invaluable purchasing tools that help consumers choose from over 6,000 wineries in the US alone. “The Grand Harvest Awards are a great forum for producers to have their wines evaluated by experienced judges in the context of their respective growing regions,” said competition chairman Bill Traverso. “Wines from up-and-coming regions such as Nebraska and Florida garnered gold medals.” Details: vwm-online.com/gha

West Coast Wine Competition (WCWC)

This traditional wine competition continues its mission of awarding medals to outstanding West Coast wines. The 28th annual competition awarded a total of 14 Double Gold, 77 Gold, 412 Silver, and 400 Bronze medals from a field of nearly 1,400 entries. “The quality of the entries was especially impressive this year, so any winery winning a medal should be truly proud,” said Robert Merletti, publisher of Vineyard & Winery Management. Established in 1982, the West Coast Wine Competition recognizes outstanding wines produced in Arizona, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Washington, Australia, Baja California (Mexico), British Columbia (Canada) and New Zealand. This year, the competition added entries from Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, and the wine regions of South America. “We didn’t have one or two regions dominating the awards, so this year’s results were very even across the board,” said competition Chairman Bill Traverso, a 35 year old veteran of the wine trade. “It proves that good winemaking can occur in wine regions throughout the US and overseas.” Details: vwm-online.com/wcwc

International Eastern Wine Competition & Riesling Championships (IEWC)

The 34th International Eastern Wine Competition (IEWC), one of the oldest and largest professional wine competitions in the United States, was held May 19-21, 2010 in Watkins Glen, New York. Judges awarded 1,144 medals (44 Double Gold, 151 Gold, 399 Silver, and 558 Bronze) from a field of 1,600 entries that were submitted by wineries in 37 American states and three Canadian provinces (British Columbia, Ontario, and Quebec) as well as the countries of Argentina, Australia, Chile, Germany, Italy, New Zealand, South Africa, and Spain. Entries were evaluated by an experienced group of professional wine judges with backgrounds in wine marketing, education and media, enology, viticulture, food and beverage, hospitality, and tourism. The top medal results were very eclectic, from natives to hybrids to regular and non-mainstream vinifera grapes, showing outstanding quality across Northern America. Details: vwm-online.com/iewc

NextGen Wine Competition for Millennial Wine Drinkers

Setting the standard for millennial wine consumer’s desires and buying trends, the 2011 NextGen Wine Competition for Millennial Wine Drinkers keeps the pulse on today’s fast-paced young wine buyers. Millennials are discovering wine in record numbers. Domestic volume increased 11% between 2003 and 2007, and imported wine volume increased 27%. According to the Wine Council, Millennials accounted for 46% of the growth and if savvy wine marketers are embracing this growing trend then you should too!

All judges will be aged 21-35, including rising chefs, winemakers, sommeliers, wine educators, bloggers, bloggers, members of the media, and other qualified individuals who can fairly represent personal preference to both colleagues and consumers. Millennials’ level of influence can affect your future wine sales and may also serve as your best wine ambassador, quickly spreading the word about your medal-winners through various social channels. “This is the only wine judging with young, savvy, and sophisticated wine consumers in mind. Our judges reflect the age of our target audience. Whether you realize it or not, Millennials are today’s wine buyers, not a segment of the market to be ignored. As a winemaker, producer, retailer, you can’t afford notto care what Millennials are consuming,” claims Gio Balistreri, NextGen Chairman. Details: vwm-online.com/nextgen

International Women’s Wine Competition

“Women and Wine”, a study of 4,306 women in France, Germany, the UK, Japan, and the US, was carried out between January and March of 2009 among readers of Decanter and Livingetc magazines. The research was commissioned as part of a regular annual survey by Vinexpo, the world’s largest wine and spirit exhibition. According to the survey, women chose and bought eight out of every ten bottles of wine consumed at home. That’s why this competition was conceived, creating an untapped target audience for wine sellers. It’s mission? To provide the female perspective to professional wine buyers and consumers. This helps them identify wines that women will enjoy and ultimately purchase.

In 2007 the National Women’s Wine Competition was born- a competition judged entirely by women.

The first competition was independently staged in Santa Rosa, California and was considered a smash success. Now, after a passing of the torch, this ever-growing event has joined the ranks of prestigious wine competitions expertly produced by Vineyard & Winery Management magazine. We have renamed the competition as the International Women’s Wine Competition, providing an even larger scope for entries in years to come. IWWC is committed to the highest standards of competition. Our promise to entrants is that wines will be appropriately categorized and judged by leading women in the wine industry. Details: vwm-online.com/iwwc

Professional Development Conferences and Trade Shows

Do you know how quickly the wine industry is changing and are you keeping up with the changes necessary to stay competitive and profitable? It’s never too late to learn a new tip or tactic to enhance your skill set and make your business more profitable. That’s why we’ve designed our Professional Development Series of seminars and conferences designed for the wine industry. Exhibitors also benefit by showcasing their products and services to uniquely targeted audiences.

Wineries Unlimited Conference & Trade Show

March 27-29, 2012, Richmond, VA

Join us for the largest wine industry trade show and conference east of the Rockies! For 36 years, Wineries Unlimited has grown into the industry’s foremost event of its kind with upwards of 2,300 winery and vineyard personnel in attendance last year. The three-day conference includes sessions for newcomers, special workshops, and multiple session tracks on enology, viticulture, management, and marketing issues. This is the buying show for the Eastern/Midwestern wine trade designed for and attended by vineyard and winery owners in this wine market. A survey given to attendees revealed that 40% of respondents made purchases of $20,000 or more at the show. Numerous purchases over $100,000 were also recorded. The two-day trade show houses over 330 exhibitor booths to showcase products and services. Because of the large geographic spread of the Eastern/Midwestern wine industry, exhibitors tell us they do a large part of their business at this show as a result of the face-to-face contact made there. Suppliers have a chance to greet and sell to winery owners, operators and grape growers from over 33 states and provinces (and counting!). Don’t miss this cost-effective way to reach your growing Eastern/Midwestern market! Unique social events include a Welcome “Bring your own Bottle” Wine Reception, Keynote Luncheon, and the Best of the East Grand Gala and Gold Medal Tasting of winners from last season’s International Eastern Wine Competition. Please visit the event website for more information.
