12 Ways to Help Increase Revenue in 'The New Normal'

With so much uncertainty week to week caused by the increase in Corora virus cases, you may be asking yourself, 'Is this the new normal?'. Vines OS polled some clients to share what they are doing to help drive sales during this increasingly difficult time. Here's what some are doing: 

  1. Sell tickets to virtual barrel tastings with mini bottles. 
  2. Offer flat rate or discounted shipping - it's the number one reason for lost sales online. People don't like to pay for shipping, but they need it more than ever now. 
  3. Arrange for curbside pickup or local delivery options, making it easy for members or customers to buy online and drop by to pick it up or have it delivered locally for less.
  4. Sell limited tasting bookings in advance, and designate specific tables throughout the day based on limited availability. 
  5. Help your customers stay connected, and bring a little fun into their lives with Virtual Tastings.
  6. Set up Customer chat on your website. Sales can increase by up to 40% after chat is made available because people have questions as they are buying.

New Tastings Reservations on Vines OS includes Table and Seating Location Restrictions

Sell limited availability tasting reservations on your Vines OS hosted site, allowing customers to choose only available tables and locations based on their party size and your availability. Based on your opening restrictions, you can limit the options based on your actual table or location availability. If you have 3 tables that seat 4, plus 3 spots for two at the wine bar, you can take reservations for only what is available based on daily bookings. The Will Call list will provide you with daily or weekly reservations, including guest names and member status.

How Wineries, Restaurants & Retailers Are Coping in a New COVID-Driven World

Online sales have suddenly become a critical path for wineries, wine retailers and other small businesses forced to forego in-person on-premise sales due to widespread Shelter-In-Place orders. If you have an online commerce site, now is the time to get it optimized so you can make it as easy as possible for customers, both existing and new, to do business with you. Be as creative as possible in making offers and engaging your club members as we navigate these uncharted waters.                       

Shipping has been a big obstacle for buyers in the past: now it’s something everyone needs to rely on. Curbside pickup at winery tasting rooms, restaurants and wine/food retail shops, as well as local delivery, have suddenly become necessities. Here are some ideas to help you make the most of online sales.

                       

Gift cards are great ways to drive more sales during the closures, and can be either digital or physical (i.e., plastic logo’d cards sent via USPS to the recipient). Remind your customers that gift cards are a quick and easy way to show some love to their kid’s teachers, their friends, hairdresser, favorite waiter, family members, a caregiver or a favorite first responder, all of whom could use a boost right now. Also consider adding extra value on top of the purchase price, such as “Buy a full case and get 30% off + $10 flat rate shipping,” or perhaps access to a special wine. You can offer to add an extra “bonus” value on top of the purchase, say 20% on top of a $100 gift card, to thank your customers for supporting your business through this hardship.

Does Your Homepage Uncork the Best Impression?

We all know that there’s no place like home. So, is your website homepage the kind of destination your customers and potential customers want to visit more than once? Visit it now, and ask yourself the following questions.

Does it properly convey the essence of your brand and encourage people to be part of your unique experience?

Does your homepage make acquiring your wines a simple act, or an advanced placement test? How easy is it for customers to find out what’s new, what’s on sale, what’s being featured? Can people easily view your current event lineup and buy tickets?

Make sure that your homepage encourages streamlined, hassle-free access to every revenue aspect of your business. After all, that’s the bottom line for its existence.

No matter what the original reason for their visit, you want them to at a minimum sign up for your mailing list. 

Remember, you only get one chance to make a good first impression. Put as much thought into your homepage as you do your proprietary blend. It’s your billboard on the Internet.

Here are some ideas for what your home page should prominently include:

  • Featured wines – Every winery should always offer a focal point for shoppers on the homepage. This can be new releases, customer favorites or recent award winners, or a mix of all three. Make it obvious. Don’t expect customers to hunt down for this information.  Awards and scores are big news for customers, so if you’ve got ‘em, flaunt ‘em!  The “Feature” part of your homepage is critical to focus attention. Perhaps they came to your website to check out an event: grab their attention right away and tell them about the latest award or score and make them want to buy.
  • Make it easy to purchase – Customers should be able to make one click and purchase any of your featured wine easily, without being forced to register, to login or to create an account.  Always include pricing information, and display member pricing to encourage membership. Club members should always be able to see their discounts quickly and easily, and have the option to login to view their past orders. Bottom line: never force a visitor to login to make a sale. 
  • Events – Always promote upcoming events and sell tickets. Make sure past events automatically fall off the page and are no longer showing, as it makes you look like nobody is paying attention. Show member pricing for events, encouraging them to take advantage of their special status. 
  • Member specials – Promote your wine club prominently.  Present in simple bullet point format the members benefits and make it easy to sign up. Offer an extra on the spot incentive to become a member.  
  • Hours of operation – Make sure your customers can instantly see when you are open, and whether you accept appointments for off-hours visits. Don’t make visitors click to get this information.
  • Contact–  Your phone number and address, along with hours of operation, should be prominently displayed on the homepage.
  • Tell your story – Create a small teaser that states what makes you special. Give a glimpse into your history. Link to the details, but give visitors a reason to dig deeper.
  • News – Use a brief summary of news items to let your visitors know what is going on, along with reviews and any press mentions.  These should ideally be automatically pulled in from your social media accounts to avoid having to make updates in multiple locations.
  • Keep in touch – Encourage every visitor to sign up for your newsletter.  Every email address you collect is a possible future wine or event ticket sale.

Four Signs Your Shopping Cart Is Costing You Money

When was the last time you tried to use your own website to purchase wine from a smartphone? How easy is your shopping cart to use? Do you know if your site is mobile-friendly?

Here are four sure signs that your website may be leaving money on the table:

1. Do you force guests to create an account (big hassle) or require them to login in order to buy your wine? Bad for business. Many shoppers don’t want to be that intimate with you. They just want to make a purchase and move on. 

Research shows that up to 75% of users will abandon a cart if forced to register or login while making a purchase. In another study, online purchases increased by as much as 45% when forced registration was removed.

2. Do you automatically recognize valuable Club Members when they arrive at your storefront? Do you instantly provide them with their discounts so they can easily see how much they will save on each purchase? If not, you’re losing sales, for sure. 

3. Do you automatically upsell the benefits of your Wine Club during the checkout process? Making a sale is great: gaining a Club Member is even better. Guests should be able to clearly see the Club Member prices and be told precisely how much they would save on the order they are submitting, e.g., “Members would save $18 on this order.” Further, guests should be able to join the Club easily, without ever leaving the checkout page. 

4. Is your site optimized for mobile devices? Most millennials don’t have desktops: they use their smartphones for everything. More and more ecommerce is moving to mobile platforms. Based on Vines OS Winery Solution

November 7, 2014, San Jose, CA — Vines OS, a comprehensive eCommerce winery solution built specifically for wineries, announces the launch of the Wineries of Santa Clara Valley wine association’s website, santaclarawines.com

Prior to its conversion to the new Vines OS platform, the previous website lacked both organization and flexibility. It was also difficult to change without resorting to a programmer. Further, it lacked the ability to conduct ecommerce of any kind. 

Now, the Winery Association’s member wineries can add their own events directly to the site and make changes to their information easily at any time.  A new interactive map allows visitors to see hours of operation, along with driving directions to each member winery. It also provides detailed information on each winery, as well as background information on the region, making the site a one-stop shop for visitors to find out about all winery events in the region.

According to Greg Richtarek, President of the Wineries of Santa Clara Valley, and a co-engineer, along with Supervisor Mike Wasserman of the recently launched Santa Clara Valley Wine Trail, “The new website layout is more modern, elegant and completely editable by members. We no longer need to rely on a programmer to make the simplest changes. With the Vines OS architecture, navigation is much more intuitive and we were easily able to add a YouTube channel.  We are now working on a 'Plan your Visit' section to include restaurant, hotel and local park information. We’ll also be adding an ecommerce capability to purchase event tickets and commemorative Wine Trail items.”
