Q & A

  1. Among the world’s fruit crops, where do wine grapes rank in number of acres planted? #1
  2. How many gallons of wine were lost in the 1906 San Francisco earthquake? 30 million
  3. How long does it take to harvest a commercial crop from newly replanted grape vines? 4-5 years
  4. How many varieties of wine grapes exist worldwide? 10,000
  5. How much white zinfandel is consumed in this country? Too much
  6. A bottle of opened wine stored in the refrigerator lasts how much longer than it would if stored at room temp? 6-16 times longer
  7. What are the top three U.S. states in terms of wine consumption? CA, NY, FL
  8. What percentage of restaurant wine sales do red wines represent? 55%
  9. What is the average cost of the grapes used to produce a $20 bottle of wine? $2.64
  10. Should I ever use a decanter for my wines? A decanter is used mainly to remove sediment from older red wines.  Also, it can be used to open up young red wines.  Otherwise, wine will “breathe” enough in your glass and decanting is not necessary.
  11. Why should I swirl wine in my glass before I drink it? By swirling your wine, oxygen is invited into the glass, which allows the aromas to escape.
