The Crusher Digital Finishing Press

Paragon Label Purchases a Custom Made Crusher Digital Finishing Press
27 January, 2015

After a year of intense research and development we are pleased to announce the installation of our custom made Crusher Digital Finishing Press.

This extraordinary press was created from our vision in collaboration with CEI, a custom engineering company located in California.  By combining the equipment of three top manufacturers, we were able to create a finishing press that compares to no other.  Complete with three flexo heads and a revolutionary foiling and embossing unit, this press offers our customers a multitude of finishing opportunities that have not previously been available.  With extremely tight registration, we can now print metallic colors along with spot varnish on digital labels.  Even more exciting, the foil and emboss unit can print multiple foil colors while offering embossing that cannot be matched - all in one pass.  This is due to the fact that this machine embosses with four times more tonnage than any other equipment in the marketplace.  The "Crusher" will produce maximum, deep, sculptured emboss detail while also crushing lead time.

Please call Paragon Label for a personal tour of our printing plant and to see this revolutionary piece of equipment in action.

Veteran Printing Pro Joins Paragon Label as VP of Sales and Marketing
27 January, 2014

Petaluma, CA – Jason Grossman, CEO of Paragon Label in Petaluma, CA. announced today that he has hired Travis Pollard, one of the most knowledgeable, innovative and successful wine label printing experts in the industry, as Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Paragon Label.

Pollard, a 5th generation Californian, is a twenty-five year veteran of the label printing industry and one of the early pioneers of digital printing for wine labels. He has worked with some of the most well-known label printers in the North Bay as a prepress and graphics manager, digital business manager and printing consultant.

“We are beyond ecstatic to have Travis join the Paragon team,” says Paragon founder Jason Grossman. “He has a deep passion for both printing and the art of fine wine making. He is an expert in every phase of this business. He has played a key role in mainstreaming HP Indigo digital printing in the wine industry and has a total knowledge of digital and Flexo printing as well as waterless offset printing. He has studied fine wine making and lives and breathes this industry.”

Pollard agrees, “I love this business and it an honor to be selected for this position to help Paragon’s continued growth in the wine industry. Paragon is a family-owned company and that is very important to me as most wineries are family-owned and I love that synergy and connection. Paragon has a great reputation and I like the fact that they work with wineries of all sizes.”

“People are extremely passionate about wine, which is why label design and print quality are so important in this market. On-time delivery is critical since bottling, a significant cost in the process, cannot be completed until the labels are applied. It is a critical process and we will be working closely with our clients throughout the decision-making process.

“Paragon is dedicated to extraordinary customer service and I am looking forward to working with the entire team to continue to elevate the level of service and the quality of labels that Paragon brings to the market.”

Pollard is a founding partner in 4 Parts, a marketing and design company serving the wine industry as well as an advisory board member of Pristine – a new smart products company accepted into the UC Berkeley SkyDeck Startup Incubator/Accelerator.

Travis Pollard will be with the Paragon Label team at the Unified Wine and Grape Symposium held at the Sacramento Convention Center January 29 and 30 at Booth #1313.

Paragon Printed Award-Winning Labels for Mutt Lynch Winery
19 February, 2013

For the second year in a row, Mutt Lynch Winery has been named Label Sweepstakes Winner by the judging committee for the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition. Mutt Lynch who won for its “mbf” (Man's Best Friend) series of wine also picked up a Best of Class/Series for the same entry.

“To win this award once is an honor. To win it two years running is incredible!” said Mutt Lynch Owner and Winemaker, Brenda Lynch.

Lynch who is known as a winemaker on a mission—to make great wine and to give a leg up (so to speak) to canines in need of rescue, noted that a portion of annual revenues for Mutt Lynch are donated to animal rescue organizations throughout the year.

Showcasing this mission is the winery’s new limited production, vineyard designate series of wine entitled “mbf” (Man’s Best Friend). The series utilizes black and white photography with compelling imagery in labels developed by Rae Huestis Design, Walnut Creek, CA. Ms. Huestis has been designing the winery’s labels since its inception. Paragon Label of Petaluma, CA provides label printing services for the winery.

“We knew we had a hit on our hands from the start based on consumer and trade response to the wines. I’m thrilled and delighted with the reception that we’ve gotten to the labels as well because it’s a validation of the passion that’s behind the brand” added the acclaimed winemaker.

An industry veteran with over 20 years’ experience, Ms. Lynch has garnered over 150 medals in the last five years for Mutt Lynch wines.

She founded the winery in 1995 along with co-owner and husband Chris Lynch.

The couple’s dog “Patch” an ex-racing greyhound from New Zealand serves as canine ambassador to the winery’s many “best friends.”

Paragon Label and VGR form strategic partnership
04 February, 2013

Goal is to provide one-stop shop for wine labels, glass, other services

Sharing a common vision, the founders of Paragon Label and Vintners Global Resource have formed a strategic partnership to provide small-and-medium-size wineries with a package of labels, bottles, supplies and services from a single source.

At the same time, Paragon Label is expanding its manufacturing capabilities with new technology, software, equipment and materials.

Andy Brassington, Jason Grossman Andy Brassington (left), CEO of Vintners Global Resource, and Jason Grossman, CEO of Paragon Label, have formed a strategic partnership for labels, bottles, closures, packaging and other winery one-stop shop services.

“Our customers are the most important part of this equation,” said Jason Grossman, CEO and founder of Petaluma-based Paragon Label (707-773-4363, paragonlabel.com). “We want to do everything we can to help our clients have access to the most efficient logistical support system possible through one vendor — while leaving the rest to us.”

While shaping their joint venture as a one-stop-shop, winery customers will still be able to pick and choose only those services they require.

As family owned and operated firms, both Paragon Label and VGR management teams can relate to those who operate family wineries.

According to Andy Brassington, CEO of VGR in Kent, Wash., “Our goal is to offer everything from the highest quality labels to bottles, closures of all types, as well as silk screen printing, warehousing, transportation and ultimately an outside team of designers to help winery owners create a public image for their dreams.”

The partners see their venture as a solution provider giving time back to winery owners so they won’t have to manage multiple vendor networks, freeing them up to focus on making wine and building their brands.

“There are no minimum order requirements. We do the sourcing, stock inventory and arrange for trucking all on one invoice and one price,” Mr. Brassington said.

New wood veneer wine labels being printed on a Paragon Label web press. Advanced technology and materials are being introduced to the manufacturing mix, including MacDermid plates, an Esko operating system, as well as laser and inkjet printing technology.

“We ask our customers to give us their best estimate of an annual forecast. We stock bottles to meet and exceed this estimate against a purchase order allowing clients to draw down only what they need when they need it.”VGR (888-250-1851, vintnersglobal.com) is an established bottle distributor with warehouses and representatives in California, Ohio, Oregon, Washington and China. The firm plans to add Stockton to this list in the near future. Paragon Label is also stocking VGR inventory in Petaluma.

While primarily focused on the western U.S., VGR also distributes bottles in Ohio, Virginia, Pennsylvania and New York.

VGR has established relationships with Bennu Glass in Kalama, Wash.; Alliance Packaging in Renton, Wash.; as well as providers of metal screw-top and Nova Twistplastic closures.

The company plans to announce an agreement with a leading cork supplier soon. VGR has also teamed with Tri-S, Inc., specializing in bottle screen printing, located in Tualatin, Ore.

To meet the challenges of an ever- changing marketplace, Paragon is deploying Esko’s pre-press solutions as well as a new software operating system for packaging design and commercial printing.

Paragon, a provider of digital and flexographic pressure-sensitive label printing, precision foiling, embossing and rotary screen printing services, has won more than 35 national and international awards for technical excellence in label printing and for its innovative environmental practices.

The company has adapted laser technology, using equipment obtained from the former Lasercraft Inc., to add dynamic dimensions to the production of wine labels.

Mr. Grossman is introducing a new label substrate using ultra thin wood veneers as a printing surface capable of being threaded through a web press without cracking or stretching.

Pressman Jeff Xayavong (left) and Jason Grossman, CEO of Paragon Label, with some of the company’s new web-fed wood veneer wine labels.

“When using natural wood, each label will be unique with differing background wood grains, colors and hues,” he said.

Paragon has installed MacDermid plates that offer high end offset quality and fine detailing for each project.

In addition, the company has plans to bring inkjet printing technology to the North Bay.

While some 90 percent of Paragon’s labels are destined for the wine industry, the firm also produces labels for the spirits industry, cosmetic firms, nutraceutical suppliers, olive oil and balsamic vinegar producers as well as a candle-making company.

Paragon is also expanding its reach to new wine growing regions in Arizona and Colorado.

“Both Andy and I know what it’s like to have to work with a number of vendors and suppliers. We want to find ways to simplify this process. Like family owned wineries, we plan to stay in business for the long term and do what we can to take the hassle out of back office sourcing by offering a consistent program of mutual support for our customers,” Mr. Grossman said.

PARAGON LABEL KICKS OFF 2013 WITH INNOVATIVE NEW DESIGN-DRIVEN WEB SITE

Quotes from Customers, Elegant and Easy to Read Pages and Fun, Fascinating Facts Highlight New Paragon Label Web Site

Petaluma,CA– Paragon Label, one of the fastest-growing pressure-sensitive label printers inSonomaCountyhas introduced their new, unique 2013 web site. The stylish, design-driven presentation is a far cry from typical business to business sites. With an elegant, contemporary format, easy to navigate and read pages and pertinent and fascinating information, the Paragon Label web site gives a whole new and totally unexpected designer look to a ‘unglamorous’ image of a 25,000 sq. ft. printing plant.

“When you think about a printing factory, you usually don’t think about something elegant,” says family-owned, Paragon Label company president, Jason Grossman. “So when we decided to create a brand-new web site, we wanted to show people that printing a label is really an art form that takes many different shapes. Our goal is to get people to take a further look at what the printing process is all about, from process and collaboration to sustainability and keeping manufacturing in theUSA. A label is so much more than something you stick on a bottle.”

Paragon Label, which was launched by Jason Grossman in 1998 and specializes in flexography and digital printing, has won more than twenty-five awards for technical excellence in label printing and more than a dozen national and international awards for their innovative environmental practices.

“We are a pretty interesting printing operation, “ says Petaluma resident and stanch environmentalist Jason Grossman, “We are very committed to our recycling program, our employees support our conservation measures and if we can help other businesses succeed in their own environmental efforts, we’re glad to do it.”

Jason says they are probably the only printing operation in Northern California that offers factory tours right on the plant floor, allows employees to bring their dogs to work and believe MADE in the USA is more than a slogan – it’s how they do business.

“Paragon Label has always been on the edge of technology and dedicated to quality,” says Paulette Nolan, Principal of SOGO Creative and designer of the new web site. “As a company they embrace innovation, enjoy the design process, and make you feel like you are part of the family. Our combined efforts truly shine with the new website.”

Paragon Label’s Laserweb – Extraordinary Extreme Die Cutting
14 December, 2011

In 2000, Jason Grossman, president of Paragon Label in Petaluma, acquired the Laserweb – the only label laser-cutting system of its kind in the world. The Laserweb produces results that are absolutely unique and unquestionably exceptional. Jason Grossman explains:

“We are very fortunate to have this one-of-a-kind offline, high-tech laser-cutting system. It produces extremely precise laser cuts on both the interior and exterior of a label and the results are becoming a trademark of the kind of quality and caliber of printing you can expect at Paragon Label.

“The Laserweb was invented by a physicist who understood that only a laser beam can make one of the cleanest cuts in the world. No one can enter our Laserweb without wearing safety goggles because the production involves laser beams that hit the paper at 10,000 degrees Fahrenheit. The resulting cuts, some so tiny you almost need your magnifying glasses to see them, are spectacular. And these intricate little cuts can only be made by our Laserweb.

“The effects you can get with this system are really little works of art. That I know of, there isn’t another company in the world doing this kind of laser-cutting and we are all proud to own this technology. Because of the Laserweb, we are producing labels that simply were impossible to print just a few years ago. Pretty amazing when you think about it.”

The hands-on owner of the thirteen year-old printing company, Grossman says, “I am delighted to hand this critical key position over to Curtis. His keen knowledge of every phase of the printing process is extraordinary and he will be a tremendous asset to us with his experience and professionalism. Curtis will also continue to work on streamlining our operations with new equipment, processes and procedures.”

Jason Grossman adds, “We’ve always been proud of promoting from within and Curtis is a real natural and absolutely the best choice we could have made for this position.”

A recent Penngrove resident, Paul brings a wealth of experience to the Paragon team. For the past nine years, he was an R&D research engineer in Palo Alto with Hewlett Packard Laboratories. Because of their emphasis on creative thinking I am able to work closely with the client, our pressmen and designers to translate and ensure that what I see on the screen is what the buyer will see on the label.”

“This translation process is delicate, precise and often demanding but the end result is an incredible collaboration between man and science, vision and visionary and client and pre-press. The end product is the result of those processes.”

Paragon Label & Mrs. Grossman's Win Statewide & National Awards For Sustainable Practices
04 May, 2011

The California Air Resources Board and the Flexographic Technical Association (FTA) recognize and celebrate sustainable efforts.

Paragon Label, the fast-growing, Petaluma-based label printing enterprise, and legendary sticker manufacturer Mrs. Grossman’s, have won two major awards for their sustainable practices. The family-owned companies, which work side by side and were certified green in 2009, have been consistently winning accolades for their pioneering environmental practices.

On May 1, Paragon Label was named a winner of the 11th Annual FTA Environmental Excellence Award. The competition was sponsored by the Flexographic Technical Association, the largest Flexo printing trade association in the country. With competition the heaviest in the history of the awards, Paragon Label rose to the forefront.

FTA award judge Jay Downey of InterFlex Group said, “Paragon Label’s entry was an excellent demonstration of involving the workforce to implement change through a team approach in recycling…to take the stress off the environment.”

The second award, the CoolCalifornia Small Business - Climate Leader Award, was presented on May 3, by the State of California Air Resources Board. The award celebrates small companies that have demonstrated exceptional leadership to reduce their energy bills and greenhouse gas emissions and have made notable, voluntary achievements towards reducing their climate impact.

“We are honored to have received these two awards from such prestigious organizations,” says company president Jason Grossman. “We’re a small company (seventy-five employees) with big ideas about how to protect and keep our environment healthy.”

In addition to winning these two recent awards, Paragon Label has also won:

  • 2010 North Bay Award for Sustainable Manufacturing Practices – State of California Assembly, Assemblyman Jared Huffman
  • 2010 Label Industry Global Award for Sustainability and Environmental Responsibility
  • Best Environmental Practices Award – 2009 –Sonoma County Business Environmental Alliance
  • Pacific Gas & Electric Innovative Leadership Award for Energy Conservation 2005 – 2009

PG&E ClimateSmart program was so impressed with the company’s environmental commitment that they filmed a broadcast quality two minute video. Here’s the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZvkXBuB_mvE

PARAGON LABEL – MAKING SUSTAINABILITY A PRIORITY
16 March, 2011

Petaluma, CA - Paragon Label, the eleven-year-old Sonoma County printing company, was the first label printer to be certified green (2008) in the North Bay. Paragon has been recognized and applauded for their sustainable practices by the California State Legislature – Sustainable North Bay Award, the Label Industry Global Award for Environmental Responsibility and Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) – Innovative Leadership Award for Energy Conservation.

“Sustainability is more than recycling and reusing,” says Paragon president, Jason Grossman. “It’s the way we do business and treat our employees, customers and vendors. At Paragon we believe sustainability is as much about taking care of your family and your community as it is taking care of the environment.”

To educate and motivate Paragon employees, Jason launched a companywide green campaign “In Good Company” in December 2010.

“Our goal was to let our employees know that recycling and conservation are not an option, they are a mandate. Everything from separating liner papers, cleaning ink containers to discontinuing all plastic eating utensils, paper plates and cups was discussed. We asked everyone how we could do a better job; we set up an email just for people to write their suggestions; we’re posting new signs so everyone knows what gets recycled and where.”

Paragon is even creating a Green Hall of Fame so some of the 30,000 visitors who take their factory tour each year (Paragon Label shares their factory with Mrs. Grossman’s, the oldest and largest sticker manufacturer in the country and one of the most popular factory tours in California) can read about the company’s commitment to a clean environment.

This wall will feature Paragon’s green achievements as well as the conservation accomplishments of their winemaking customers. “Our goal is to celebrate and promote all of our customers who are involved with sustainable practices,” says Jason, adding, “our factory tours are a great vehicle to put our message in front of a lot of people so the public can see how seriously we take this commitment.”

Jason says that Paragon takes care of all of their customers and treats everyone with the same respect, green or not. “But if we can support companies whose core values and green practices are in tune with ours – well, that’s just good business.” And adds “and it’s good for planet.”

What type of printing do you do?

We do up to 10 color pressure-sensitive flexography, as well as digital printing on our HP Indigo press and both inline and offline hot foil stamping and embossing. We also have a proprietary laserweb, which can cut intricate designs in the label that a normal diecut couldn't do.

When can I expect to receive a label quote?

Under normal circumstances we can get you a quote within 24 hrs. You may want to use our quote request link to expedite this process.

Is there a minimum order?

5,000 labels is our preferred targeted minimum in order for us to maintain cost effectiveness. If your label order dictates that digital printing is best suited to your parameters, a lower quantity of 1,000 would be our targeted minimum.

How much are your labels?

Since there are many factors which will contribute to the price of a label, we encourage you to call us directly to discuss the particulars of your project, or use our quote request link to get started.

How and when will I receive proofs?

Typically, we can generate a proof in 24 to 48 hours.

How should I prepare my art?

We work on Mac platform, and can accept Illustrator (preferred), Photoshop, Freehand, and QuarkXPress files up to the most recent versions. You may email files, upload them to us, or send us a CD or a DVD by mail. We encourage you to visit our Art Submission link for more detailed information on how to set up and send your files.

Can I be present for a press check?

Absolutely! In fact, it is recommended that you press check a label that we have never printed before. This will ensure that your label is printed exactly as you envisioned it, and provides the correct basis for color accuracy for repeat runs in the future.

I only need some minor changes. Can you make those there?

Yes! In fact, we believe that it is the best way for any changes to be made to your project, as it protects the integrity of the rest of the label art. We also have the capabilities of assisting you in the design process of a new label also. Our expertise in printing, coupled with design talents, lends itself to a superior label best suited to your product.

Can I add foil and embossing to my label?

Of course. There are two methods for each: inline and offline. Depending on the quantity and frequency of tooling usage, your sales rep will recommend the best method. Inline foil and embossing tends to be more expensive, but with larger, more frequent runs, will save money in the long run. The offline method is the most popular due to its low cost, and is best suited to shorter, single runs.

Will my label size require a new die to be purchased or do you have a list of stock dies from which I can choose?

Our dies are available for you to use, but because most of the dies in our inventory are custom-made for a specific client's needs, they may not be suited to your project. It is recommended that you speak with one our sales representatives who will assist you with your die selection.

What are your registration tolerances?

Our overall tolerances are approximately +/- 10/1000 of an inch.
