Get to Know InnoVint: Chris Muthig
10 April, 2020

Next up in our “Get to know InnoVint” series, we’d like to shine a light on Chris Muthig, who is one of our extraordinary software engineers.

How long have you been with InnoVint before coming on full time?

I started with InnoVint, initially, almost four years ago, but had to leave for a while. I started working on the product again in 2019 and joined the team full-time in 2020.

What is your favorite thing about being a software engineer with InnoVint?

My favorite part of working with InnoVint is building software that creates a noticeable impact on the day-to-day life of its users. My goal is to let winemakers spend time on the parts of their jobs that they enjoy most and skip the boring parts. It is also nice that “winemaking software” is a much more interesting response to “what do you do for a living” at parties than “credit monitoring”

How did you get into wine?

My wife is a winemaker at a small winery. I have gone through the process of building up a small winery, working abroad in Australia, and taking the WSET Level 4 with her. It has been an exciting learning experience for me.

What wines or wine regions are really exciting to you right now?

I’m most excited about cider right now, actually. I’m especially interested in dry sparkling ciders created using the traditional method. I am also learning about sparkling wine in general and really enjoying it.

How has your knowledge of winemaking grown since working with InnoVint?

I have learned the most about creating wine at scale, working with a larger team. The techniques, organization, and equipment introduced as wineries and winemaking teams get larger is fascinating.

As an effective distributed team, we're keenly aware of the pitfalls (and potential) of moving tasks beyond the typical onsite winery or office. We're available to guide you as you face the challenges of completing the everyday winemaking tasks that are so important this time of year.

From accessing your cellar plan remotely, to communicating with your team, to organizing your production schedule, our web and mobile apps can assist you in powerful ways that are so vital in extraordinary times like these. Please don't hesitate to reach out if there's anything we can do!

Vineyard Information: Anywhere, Anytime

During these uncertain times with COVID-19 you may feel as if you’re in a holding pattern. Everything around us seems to be on standby as we're told to isolate and sequester. However, one thing that we can’t put on pause are our vineyards. With all the work we’ve done since harvest, the vines are sensing the advent of Spring. Whether we’re ready for it or not, they are ready to produce our next vintage.

InnoVint Expands Team with New Sales Manager, Kathy Turner
24 February, 2020

2020 kicked off in an exciting manner for those of us at InnoVint. We are beyond thrilled to bring on new members to our team, which we will be introducing you to over the next few months. One of those people is our new Sales Manager, Kathy Turner. In her new role, Turner will be applying her extensive sales background to expand brand awareness for InnoVint and build new client relationships.

“Kathy will be a great asset to our sales team as she has a deep passion to improve the lives of winemakers,” states Founder and CEO Ashley DuBois Leonard. “I look forward to Kathy demonstrating the value of InnoVint to many wineries around the nation.”

Turner brings to her role a unique combination of hands-on winemaking (with over 10 harvests across California and abroad) and top-notch sales experience, gained from over 5 years working with winery clients on the Central and South Coast. “It’s rare that you get an opportunity to really make a significant impact in an entire industry and InnoVint is already making that kind of impact with their customers,” says Turner. “I look forward to facilitating the industry’s shift to a truly mobile solution that leverages technology to its full potential.”

Turner discovered her love of wine while studying in Rome during college and worked as a project manager in SoCal for several enterprises, including the J. Paul Getty Museum and boutique web services companies. It was the dotcom ‘crash’ that encouraged her to take a leap and make a career change, moving to the Napa Valley to study and work in wine. She was lucky to be a part of great winemaking teams in Napa, Sonoma and Paso Robles. In 2011, Turner joined the sales team of MA Silva, the premier supplier of corks and glass to the wine industry, where she developed her passion for consultative sales. Working closely with her customers to ensure their success became the most fulfilling aspect of her role.

In 2017, Turner realized a dream to work harvest abroad and traveled to New Zealand, Italy and France – expanding her wine knowledge and gaining an even deeper appreciation for the breadth of the industry. She returned to Southern CA to step back into sales but keeps alive the dream of one day making her own wine in a little corner of Europe.

“I’m excited to join the InnoVint team and am so impressed with how the company brings together talented winemakers and technology experts to produce a truly paradigm-changing solution for the wine industry. Being a part winemaking teams at both large and small wineries – it is the paperwork and data management that we dread and avoid. InnoVint’s winery software makes this process so streamlined and easy.”

Prior to joining the InnoVint team, Turner worked for Merryvale Vineyards, Estancia Winery, M.A. Silva, RedShelf and TeSoRi Imports. She holds a B.S. from Loyola Marymount University and an A.S. from Napa Valley College.

Along with adding to our team, we’ve been working non-stop to bring you new and updated features to our platform. Such as New Winery Dashboards, Sparkling Wine Production Module for tirage, disgorgement and dosage, Global Search functionality, Integrated Dip Charts and Tank Gauging and more!

We are in the middle of our annual tour stopping at a variety of trade shows across the county, where you can learn more about all these new features being released this year. We hope to see you at one of them if we haven’t yet.

If you aren’t able to make it to any of the trade shows this year, don’t hesitate to reach out to us at for more information or to schedule a demo!

Two Things Every Winery Must Complete Prior to 2020
19 December, 2019

With 2020 just a few weeks away it’s time for most wineries to close the fiscal year. What does this mean? All record-keeping for the winery should be buttoned up and finalized from 2019.

You might be asking yourself, “But I’m a winemaker, not an accountant. I’m not responsible for understanding production costs and compliance.” Well, not to be the bad guy here, but it does very much require your involvement. You’re responsible for getting production information to the people running the numbers and finalizing the TTB reports. This information is critical to understand the overall health of the business.

Therefore, the two things you must do are: finalize your winemaking records for the year, and ensure all your production costs have been applied. This way, the true cost to produce each wine is understood, and it’s easy to generate the TTB 5120.17 (old 702) report.

Don’t worry – we’re not asking you to spend all your time behind your computer trying line item all these out. You know what the best solution is? Implement winery production software that manages activity and tracks costs for you behind the scenes!

Check Out InnoVint. It’s really this easy:

InnoVint has built-in cost tracking embedded in production operations that manages all production costs to provide you a comprehensive costing snapshot at any point in time.

As you take your wines through normal winemaking operations, the winery management software will automatically distribute costs across your blending activities. You can even manage overhead costs like utilities or salaries and apply them across one, many or all of your lots as of a date in the past. You can even backdate an entire year of costing information!

Since it’s already easy to manage all of your wine movements and inventories in InnoVint, tracking costs becomes almost effortless. Even better, grant limited access to your accountant to manage it themselves and complete the TTB report in just a few clicks of the mouse.

Watch our Costing Overview Video for a deeper dive into how it works.

We’d love to have you join us for a customized demo to experience how InnoVint winery management software can help you track your costs, generate your TTB 5120.17, streamline all of your production data, and much more, all in one place.

Make 2020 your most successful year yet by joining InnoVint!

Get up and running in as little as 1 day.

InnoVint Named 2019 WINnovation Award Winner
02 December, 2019

We are honored to share that InnoVint is a 2019 WINnovation award winner. According to Wine Industry Network (WIN), the group behind the WINnovation awards, InnoVint earned the award as groundbreaking production software that enhances winery efficiency and bottom line.

Starting in 2013, WIN created the WINnovation awards to recognize the companies developing ground-breaking products or practices which produce positive contributions to the wine industry. InnoVint was one of five award winners this year. Other winners included ConeTech, Enartis USA, GOfermentor, and MASILVA USA.

George Christie, Wine Industry Network President, says, “In many cases, industry suppliers are the change agents that help winery and vineyard operations impact quality or improve efficiencies. The WINnovation Awards are a way for us to acknowledge the efforts of these suppliers and their contribution to the wine industry.”

Ashley Dubois Leonard, founder and CEO of InnoVint, worked for a number of wineries, both big and small, before launching the winery production software. She conceived InnoVint to solve the frustrations many winemakers experienced trying to get reliable and accurate information about their wine production. Of winning the award, Leonard said, “We are honored to receive this prestigious award for innovation. We continually push ourselves to create a technology solution that will help winemakers make better wine.”

InnoVint Recognized as a Leader in Barrel Tracking by Wine Business Monthly
04 September, 2019

In the August 2019 issue of Wine Business Monthly, InnoVint was listed as a leading provider of barrel tracking systems that cater to small wineries.

According to a survey conducted by Wine Business Monthly (WBM), only 9% of small wineries and 35% of medium to large wineries have a barrel barcoding system in use for tracking the contents of their barrels. The article states that many wineries are still using the tedious barrel tracking method that employs pen and paper tracking, later converting them to massive spreadsheets that must be maintained by one individual. This is consistent with what the experts at InnoVint are seeing in the winemaking industry and are striving to help winemakers move away from.

Barrel tracking is one of the easy-to-use features of InnoVint’s boutique winery software that is helping small wineries to streamline their processes and recoup the time spent manually tracking barrel contents. Founder and CEO of InnoVint, Ashley Dubois Leonard states that her goal with creating the winery software is to “take out the grunt work and ‘enable the people in the winery to do their best work.’”

As stated in the article, “InnoVint was designed so that the customer can start using it with only minimal on-boarding and training, and without the need for expensive hand-held scanners.” For many smaller wineries, the ability to use a phone as a scanner rather than investing in hand-held scanners can save them thousands of dollars.

An InnoVint customer and winemaker for Davis Estates, Jordan Jeffries was mentioned in the WBM article discussing the boutique winery software as “user-friendly and intuitive.” Jeffries also stated, “It’s very easy to figure out what the buttons do. You can teach yourself, and you don’t have to walk back to your desk to re-enter data.” The fact that he didn’t need to buy any special hardware, like scanners, was another selling feature for Jeffries.

“Jeffries loves how much data entry time InnoVint’s barrel management system eliminated, noting, ‘I don’t have to rearrange a large Excel spreadsheet every time I fill or empty,’ which frees up a significant amount of time for tasting, blending and quality control. As he walks through the winery to taste barrel samples, he can see all of a barrel’s wine information on his iPhone.” (Wine Business Monthly)

Another customer of InnoVint and general manager/partner at Sugarloaf Crush, Ronald Du Preez was also interviewed for the article in WBM. He stated that he had future plans for the boutique winery software’s vessel tagging system to get a precise location on a barrel in his facility. Using the barrel tracking feature will make it easy for Du Preez to locate barrels and will eliminate time spent trying to locate lost barrels, according to the article. Before implementing InnoVint’s software at his custom crush facility, Du Preez was using physical cards on barrels and spending a lot of time entering data into Excel spreadsheets.

The InnoVint Client Experience and Why It Matters
12 August, 2019

From the desk of Karissa Moreno, Client Solutions & Product Specialist at InnoVint

At InnoVint, we strive to deliver the best experience to our winery software clients. This experience includes everything from interacting directly with team members to how our software platform is used on a daily basis.

It’s not enough to provide an intuitive and innovative winery software solution that can track the winemaking process. And it’s not enough to have online help documents and friendly, knowledgeable client support representatives (although it helps!).

The InnoVint Client Experience Team is entirely focused on the overall client journey. Here is how our team is able to provide an excellent experience for all our clients.

We Understand Winemaking

Our Client Experience (CX) Team is made up of experienced wine professionals. With backgrounds in enology, winemaking, and production management, we’ve put in our time on the cellar floor, in the vineyards, in the lab, and at the winemaking desk. We’ve felt the stress and pressures of harvest, the exhaustion of long bottling days, frustrations with government compliance reports, etc. So when client winemakers come to us for guidance or with a request, we understand the struggle (and the time-sensitivity!) and work toward real solutions.

We Place a High Value on Client Feedback

The future of InnoVint and our winery management software is guided by the needs and wants of our clients and the continuing evolution of the industry. Our CX team is committed to – some might even say ‘obsessed’ with – production workflow efficiencies, the elimination of errors (whether on the cellar floor or with data entry), and the overall improvement of wine quality. If there is anything InnoVint can do to improve the quality of life for our clients, we want to hear about it!

We Are Great Translators

Winemaking has its own language. And so does software – aka “geek speak.” Our CX team understands the terminology winemakers use and are able to translate that to our development team to ensure that our winery software continues to be an intuitive solution that follows the production workflow.

We Are Enthusiastic Advocates

As mentioned before, our CX team is a group of passionate wine-production professionals. We use that passion, and genuine love of winemaking, to advocate for our clients and their needs. We facilitate the necessary conversations within our company to effect change and improvement. InnoVint’s CX team is positioned to gather the feedback we receive from our clients – what is overwhelmingly successful and what might need a few tweaks – and share that with our company on a regular, ongoing basis. We’re never done improving our platform!

Our clients don’t just use our winery management software product, they become part of the evolution of our company and the software itself. We are positioned at the intersection of two exciting and innovative industries – wine and technology, and the InnoVint Client Experience Team is here to help our clients navigate those roads with ease and confidence.

Outpost Wines Saves 10 – 15 Hours Per Week and Streamlines Cellar Operations
24 July, 2019

Outpost is an ultra-premium winery in Angwin, California. The winery was established in 1998 with the vision of producing wines that are a living, breathing representation of the 28 acre estate vineyard. Outpost crafts 100% varietal bottlings of Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Petite Sirah and Grenache. Under winemaker Thomas Rivers Brown’s leadership, the grapes are harvested late in the season and processed with as little manipulation as possible. Each block is fermented separately so the winemaking team can be ultra-selective about the lots that comprise the final blends.

In addition to the Estate program, the winery also crafts wines for alternating proprietors and custom crush clients.

Why Modern Software Technology Matters
26 June, 2019

From the desk of Dan Strengier, CTO of InnoVint

When I first was exposed to the wine industry, I was shocked to see the cacophony of technology used to run winery operations. Atrocious databases with a UI strapped onto it, a mess of papers and notes. I like to think this wasn’t a choice but almost forced out of necessity. When we built InnoVint, our winery management software, we knew this industry desperately needed a modern software platform.

At InnoVint, we sometimes joke that our biggest competitor is a pencil, whiteboard, and excel spreadsheets. Often times it’s this pieced-together system that runs all of a winery’s operations. While I’ve seen some incredible excel spreadsheets, they are created and controlled by a single person, they’re fragile, and are difficult to use. What if that person leaves the winery? Another scary fact is that whiteboards and notebooks always seem to have conflicting and stale information when compared to the spreadsheet. It’s a recipe for a mess. The good news is that there’s a better way to run your winery operations.

Not All Winery Management Software Is Modern

Before we built InnoVint, we looked at the other production software solutions. Unfortunately, many of these software tools were built using rudimentary development ideologies, back when web application technology was immature. Product Design, User Experience, and Visual Aesthetics were often underdeveloped. As a result, few applications from this time are still seeing new growth today.

Better Software Options Are Available (and Worthwhile)

We aren’t using windows 95 anywhere — but you wouldn’t know it if you looked at the current landscape of the winery production software.

Feature Highlight: QR Code Vessel Tracking
29 May, 2019

Track and manage your barrels, tanks, kegs, and other vessels using QR codes generated and scanned with InnoVint technology.

Wouldn't it be great if you could instantly identify and engage with all the vessels in your winery? Maximize Your Winery’s Success by Uniting Your Team
10 May, 2019

By Ashley DuBois Leonard, Founder and CEO

The premise is simple: the best software solutions are the ones that fuel the business’ success and the success of their people. Winery management software is not just a place to house data, but a tool that should provide unity, clarity, and transparency across the entire organization. It amazes me how many solutions still miss the mark on this.

InnoVint has always prioritized what solves our client’s greatest problems and what makes the biggest difference. We’re often operating on the ground level with our clients, deep in the trenches of continual improvement to provide the best user experience, but behind the scenes, we are working on much larger initiatives that fuel our higher mission: to help wineries run their businesses effectively to maximize success.

How have we embodied this priority thus far? By bringing teams together that are often siloed from one another. For example,

  • Viticulturists and grower relations unite with winemaking by way of our new Advanced Vineyard Tracking module, allowing for instant access to each growing season, expected fruit cost and crop yields.
  • Finance teams have instant visibility to production cost information with the Costing feature, which captures the true cost of a wine, allowing for more accurate margin analysis and investment justification.
  • Custom crush providers grant direct InnoVint access to their clients with the Custom Crush Permissions feature, saving them dozens of hours a week by simplifying communication and streamlining workflows.
  • Seasonal interns connect with their managers with mobile app engagement, allowing for real-time data input at the source and the elimination of back-office data entry.

Access to reliable, real-time data for production planning, financial reporting, and business optics is critical to running a successful winery business. Our future lies in building upon this foundation. InnoVint continues to invest in our clients, not only by way of product developments but more importantly with one another, facilitating avenues to share best practices and operational wins with one another.

We love this industry, and every day we spend working with our fabulous winery management software clients is a day well spent. Each partnership helps us tailor our product to better serve the winegrowing community, and we look forward to continuing to improve winery success.

Groundbreaking Vineyard Tracking Tool Provides Critical Data to Winemakers
16 April, 2019

Just in time for budbreak, InnoVint, one of the wine industry’s top winery management software companies, has released a tool that will revolutionize the way winemaking teams gain insight into their fruit sources each growing season.

Called the Advanced Vineyard Tracking system, the new feature allows wineries to observe, track, and manage block-specific events, crop estimates and grape contracts each vintage.

“It’s a feature we designed through the lens of the winemaking team,” explains Ashley DuBois Leonard, InnoVint Founder and CEO. “Wineries require critical seasonal information to be able to adjust their production plan in response to what the vintage has to offer. There hasn’t been any solution to fill this gap until now.”

Advanced Vineyard Tracking from InnoVint offers four distinct components to provide full service information management for each vineyard block:

  • Growing Season Tracking, which captures the events taking place in the vineyard throughout each season, including:
    • Phenology tracking (from budbreak to veraison)
    • Application tracking (such as irrigation schedules, spraying, thinning)
    • Visual observations (such as pest, diseases, water and nutrient status)
    • Analysis (such as cluster weights, maturity data, and phenolics)
  • Crop Estimations, which follow tonnage expectations through the season
  • Harvest Planning, which manages harvest date forecasting, scheduling and fruit receipt
  • Grape Contract Management, which manages contract terms, fruit costs and projected cash flow

As DuBois Leonard reports, Advanced Vineyard Tracking provides wineries with vintage-over-vintage insights across all vineyard sources, allowing them to “track back” each SKU’s fruit sources. This allows winemakers to have the full perspective on their final products, from bud break through the growing season to harvest, cellar management and bottling in the cellar.

“Sourced fruit and farming expenses are often the largest cost bucket for any given lot,” DuBois Leonard points out. “If high-value grapes end up in a low-tier SKU, the winery will likely reconsider that investment. And vice versa. If cost-effective grapes wind up in a premium blend, they’ve made some smart fruit sourcing decisions. Understanding fruit allocation and whether capital investments are paying off is critical to understanding cash flow.”

The InnoVint Platform, which now includes Advanced Vineyard Tracking, is the first, mobile-focused management system that allows for real-time data entry, as well as real-time data access anytime, anywhere.

“We’re winery advocates that build functional products to provide direct, immediate value to our clients,” DuBois Leonard asserts. “InnoVint is that turnkey solution to take them from vine to bottle year over year.”

5 Ways to Improve Wine Quality Through Operational Excellence
27 March, 2019

Whether your winery brings in 5 tons or over 5,000 tons a year, crafting grapes into wine requires planning, structure, and capital investment. Without a good management system in place, all that work could be compromised at any point.

Since labor is still a significant component of winemaking, investing to improve your operations will allow you to maximize your team’s potential and yield the highest quality end-product. Modern wine production software should be the foundation to manage this.

Not all wineries share the same workflow procedures or winemaking styles, but there are some shared strategies many wineries use to improve their wine quality with winery production software.

1) Minimize room for error

We’ve all been a part of simple mistakes resulting in quality compromises and inventory losses. Were a majority of these mistakes preventable if you had spent more time structuring processes and workflow? I bet so—especially during harvest when staff is tired and often overworked. Having reliable SOPs and accountable steps to follow for any given task will narrow this window for error, which in turn has undeniably positive effects for overall quality management and risk mitigation.

2) Have access to critical growing season metrics

We all know the potential for a wine’s quality is set by the vineyard. The days of sifting through your three-ring viticulture binder should be over. Having real-time insight into vineyard trends and seasonal data with strong vineyard management software is essential to be forward-thinking about future vintages and to understand how to maximize quality.

3) Re-focus your most valuable personnel on top-line work

Why would you pay your winemaker $40/hour to spend 50% of their time maintaining spreadsheets? You’re throwing away money on your most valuable personnel. Keep them focused on what builds the most value to you, which is spending time in the vineyard and cellar, tasting, networking, and growing professionally, not stagnating behind a computer. Enable them with tools that allow them to do their job from anywhere and access the information they need at their fingertips to maximize your wine quality potential.

4) Equip your team with modern tech

Select technology tools that allow your team to be most effective at their job. Whether that be utilizing a digital work order system, pushing production software notifications to your personal phone, or using mobile apps that capture and contain your production data, it’ll make your operations that more efficient and save time and money in the long run.

5) Invest in your people

Happy employees do better work. It’s just a fact. There’s no doubt that when employees feel empowered, are given the freedom to explore their art, and are encouraged to have fun produce better outcomes. Give them what they need. Allow them to do their work from where they’re most effective. Invest in technology that excites them andprovides the structure to simultaneously improve your wine quality. Provide your team with an environment where they can flourish, and your business will in turn.

Ultimately, winery management software can simplify and optimize your workflows and processes. That leads to fewer (and less costly) mistakes, more transparency throughout production, improved team accountability and dedication, and, ultimately, to produce the highest quality wine possible.

Intuitive Production Management Software to Optimize Winemaking Process
19 November, 2018

Winemakers, viticulturists, cellar masters and compliance officers can now say goodbye to cumbersome paper tracking and redundant data entry thanks to a revolutionary new software management tool offered by InnoVint, one of the wine industry’s top software development companies operating today.

Founded by UC Davis trained and experienced winemaker Ashley DuBois Leonard, the InnoVint Platform is the first mobile-focused management system that allows for real-time data entry as well as real-time data access anytime, anywhere.

“It’s a cloud-based, mobile-driven management tool that allows you to capture and relay data in real time,” confirms Ashley DuBois Leonard, InnoVint Founder and CEO. “This is a built from scratch, modern platform that solves all the issues I had as a winemaker and general manager struggling to have reliable, current information at my fingertips. It’s an all-inclusive tool from bud break to bottle, developed specifically by and for winemakers to address, track and report every single aspect of the winemaking process.”

The InnoVint platform features single point data entry simultaneously available to team members across multiple locations.

Highlights of the system include:

  • Superior Data and Activity Visualization
  • Calendars, Harvest Planning and Real-Time Notifications
  • Robust Vineyard, Cellar, and Financial Tracking
  • Digital Work Orders and Mobile Data Entry
  • FDA and TTB Compliance
  • Flexible Workflow with Full Team Engagement

The system also offers QR Code Vessel Tracking; Additive Batch Tracking & an Addition Calculator; ETS Laboratories Integration; and an Owner Based Permission System for custom crush clients and alternating proprietors.

“The accounting aspect of this software is of huge interest to our clients,” reports DuBois Leonard. “InnoVint tracks all direct and overhead costs associated with production.” The system will proportionally attribute each of the expenses involved in a bulk wine lot so our customers know exactly how much it much it costs them to produce a bottle of wine.”

Leonard DuBois notes that the InnoVint system is appropriate for all levels of winemaking. Boutique to mid-size wineries can use it to streamline operations, large wineries can employ the software to minimize risk and maximize profits, and custom crush clients are able to track and access all data on their specific wines by bond or by location at any time.

“Customers are very happy with our product and service,” DuBois Leonard points out. “We have an excellent to world class customer loyalty rating, according to the global Net Promoter Score (NPS) standards.

“It comes from building in more intelligence and quality management so that winemakers can better control and focus on the granularity of the production process,” Dubois Leonard explains. “InnoVint supplies a turnkey solution for everyone at the winery that works with or relies on production data.”

"Hey, winemaker, how much did it cost to produce that wine?"
24 July, 2018

Let's be real. We've all been prodded by someone in accounting wanting information on how production dollars are being spent. There’s a very good reason for this...

You might be asking yourself, “But I’m a winemaker not an accountant. This isn't my job.” Well, not to be the bad guy here, but it does concern you. You're responsible for getting production information to the people running the numbers. These financials are critical to understand the overall health of the business.

Don't worry - we're not asking you to spend all your time behind your computer trying line item all these costs out on paper. There is a better solution. Keep reading.
First thing's first though. Let's start with definitions.
Okay... so what are production costs anyway?
The bookkeeping term is “Cost of Goods Sold” (COGS). COGS are the direct and indirect costs attributable to producing your wines – the actual amount you spent on the grapes, the barrels you used, the sulfur you added, the packaging for your wines, even your own salary. Adding all of these together helps your winery understand how much they are making in profit for each bottle they sell.
But I'm not tracking costs yet. Where do I start?
Now is your chance to WOW your colleagues. You want to be as valuable a winemaker as you can being in such a competitive market. Get ahead of the curve by implementing production software that manages costs for you!

Check it out. It's really this easy:

InnoVint has built-in cost tracking embedded in production operations that manages all cost categories to provide you a comprehensive costing snapshot at any point in time.

As you take your wines through normal winemaking operations, the system will automatically distribute costs across your volume movements. You can even manage overhead costs like utilities or salaries and apply them across all your cellar volumes as of a previous month end or date in the past.

Since it’s already easy to manage all of your wine movements and inventories in InnoVint, tracking costs becomes almost effortless. Even better, grant limited access to your accountant to manage it themselves!
Watch our Costing Overview Video for a deeper dive into how it works.

We'd love to have you join us for a customized demo to experience how InnoVint can help your winery track your costs, generate your TTB 5120.17, streamline all of your production data, and much more, all in one place.

Make 2018 your most successful harvest by joining InnoVint!
Get up and running in as little as 1 day.

8 ways to improve wine quality and stay organized over harvest
02 July, 2018

Whether your winery brings in 5 tons or 5,000 tons, getting ready for harvest takes time, sufficient planning, and financial investment (enter harvest intern expense). However, all that work could be compromised if there isn’t proper organization throughout the entire process. Without it, you might end up burning yourself out. That is when mistakes start to happen, details fall through the cracks, and your level-headed state of mind becomes threatened.

Although not all wineries share the same workflow procedures or winemaking styles, there are some shared ways to avoid many operational headaches. We spoke with some of our boutique producers, as well as some of our larger clients, on their secrets to maintaining, if not increasing, wine quality and preserving their sanity during this chaotic time of year.

Here are some of common themes among successful wineries:

1) Strong vineyard tracking

Having the ability to record and access fruit maturity and phenologic data from anywhere, including right in the middle of your vineyard. And being able to access historical data when identifying problem blocks, as it can help you craft proactive strategies to ensure quality this year and for years to come.

2)  Plan out your picks

Don’t get caught without a home for your fruit! Using real-time vineyard data, estimate your pick dates in advance, especially for your largest lots. This helps to ensure that you don’t have to hold fruit in the cold room (if you’re lucky enough to have one) until space frees up which could compromise quality.

3)  Digital fermentation tracking

Get your Brix and Temperature readings recorded into your software the second it’s taken by your team, thereby giving you instant access to any problem spots that may arise. We all know how critical catching those temperature spikes can be and how a slight slip-up could affect quality.

4)  Get external lab results immediately

Get notified of your external lab results the minute they’re posted. Making sure your production software enables automating analytic uploads allows you take instant action on the results. You won’t have to wait for an email and manually enter the results into your database or spreadsheet to make those time-sensitive decisions.

5)   Label vessels with valuable information

Wandering around barrel rows wondering what they contain? There’s an easy solution for that. Label them with pre-populated stickers containing lot and barrel information so you know exactly what it is, all the treatments the lot has had, and recent analytics. A QR code takes it a step further, allowing you to quickly scan the barrel with your mobile device to access all that information digitally. And hey, while you’re at it, why don’t you send out a work order right there on the spot using your tablet!

6)   Digitize Work Orders

Imagine this - when harvest is over, you’re actually done! You don’t have to spend days or weeks at your desk updating your records from those piles of paper work orders. Software has come a long way in the past decade to allow for mobile entry of daily harvest information and cellar workflow. With a digital work order system, it’s quick and easy to assign tasks to your team, monitor their progress, and validate their work before it’s recorded. Say hello to your future! You can now focus all those wasted data entry hours spending time with your wines.

7)    Understand your COGS

Who knows, maybe you’ll find a little extra room in your budget to invest in that special project to take your wines to the next level! You won’t know until you start tracking costs, and over time you can use historical data to make better, more informed decisions that increase profitability.

8)   Automate compliance reporting

Stop spending time each month, quarter or year shuffling through all that paperwork to reconcile your gains and losses - look for ways to automate and simplify the process. We know you’d prefer to spend your time in the cellar focusing on your wines, and that’s how it should be!

Finding a solution that knocks out all 8 of these stressors is not a challenge. InnoVint’s intuitive and powerful winemaking system hits the mark on all of them and ensures that you have the tools to create the best wine possible, without all the headaches.  We’ve worked hard to develop a software that allows you to improve overall wine quality, and your business -- that’s a winning combination you can’t ignore.

There's still plenty of time to get started with InnoVint prior to harvest! Our winemakers on staff are ready to cater our product to your needs. Tell us a little about yourself at or give us a ring at 707-418-0119.

Change production software in 4 easy steps
01 June, 2018

As winemakers ourselves, we’ve been there. We yearned for winemaking-specific software to help us to track our cellar work in real-time and make our jobs easier. Excel and other databases weren’t cutting it, but switching to a different system seemed burdensome and costly. Solving this issue is one of the many reasons we created InnoVint back in 2013.

With InnoVint’s real-time winemaking platform, transitioning from your current system has never been easier. Whether using Excel or another database, we make the switch quick and painless so you can be up and running with InnoVint in as little as 1 day.  We pride ourselves in having the fastest self-service activation on the market.

What does the process look like?

1) Schedule a demo with one of our winemakers, either onsite or online
2) Complete the Subscription Agreement
3) Provide your bond(s) information to auto-fill your TTB forms
4) Start working with InnoVint!

When you have questions along the way we have a super helpful Online Help Center with videos, tutorials, tons of product screenshots, and step-by-step instructions to follow.

How do we get you set up so fast?  Here’s some of the ingredients to our secret sauce…

· No system setup - We maintain current, industry-generated lists of toasts, coopers, varietals, all approved appellations, you name it.  You don’t need to set this up - it’s already locked and loaded.

· We work with exports from your existing spreadsheets or database – Since most of our clients are making transitions from other systems, we have export maps that allow us to get your inventory into our system quickly and easily with little to no effort by you.

· Streamlined barrel entry – Get your barrel list into the system quickly, either by simple copy and paste or uploading a spreadsheet

Still not sure if it’s worth it? Take her for a spin. We offer a 30 day risk free guarantee. If you’re not happy, you’re released from the agreement, no questions asked.

While this streamlined setup process satisfies our small to mid-size wineries, large producers and custom crush providers often need a multi-phased roll-out across their larger team and/or locations. We offer enterprise-grade implementation plans customized to your unique operation.

No matter your model, you’ll be happy you made the switch. We can put you in touch with many neighbors of yours that are proof of this and would be glad to speak with you.

Early bud break in Northern California
07 May, 2018

Bud break arrived early this year in the Napa Valley, kicking off the beginning the 2018 growing season.  Although it feels as like the 2017 harvest just finished, winemakers across the country find themselves less than 4 months away from beginning to receive fruit.

What is on the top of your wish list to have by harvest?

Unfortunately, not all budgets are created equal, and we all don't have room to buy that new optical sorter or concrete egg we have always dreamed of.  But one thing we can all squeeze into our budget is InnoVint Production Software.

Keeping up with the TTB: The behind-the-scenes effort to respond to new legislation
12 March, 2018

Government agencies kissed their holiday break goodbye when President Trump signed the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act on December 22, 2017. Most of the provisions took effect just 10 days later on January 1, 2018. Taxation agencies scrambled to make sense of it all (and many still are), one being the TTB, the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau.

We’ve all been studying the same TTB-regulated tax classes for years: Are my still wines less than 14% alcohol by volume (taxed at a rate of $1.07/gallon) or between 14 and 21% (taxed at a rate of $1.57/gallon)? These new regulations have now changed the curriculum. The TTB increased the lower bracket from less than 14% to less than 16%, thus changing the upper bracket to 16-21%.

In general, higher alcohols have been favored in recent years (blame it on stylistic preference, global warming, and/or millenials if you will) to the detriment of winery excise tax rates. Given that most table wines range from 12% to 16% ABV, this has significant implications for most producers. For those that produce wines between 14-16% ABV it’s a welcomed change that will save them hundreds if not thousands of dollars a year.

In order for wineries to realize the financial gain from the lower tax rate TTB reporting needed to get buttoned up… fast. Wineries that rely on InnoVint to maintain their wine inventories and generate their TTB 5120.17 reports turned to us for answers. We didn’t want to jump the gun and deliver an updated form before the TTB had done so. We patiently waited them to make their move first. January quickly turned into February, and as the first reporting deadline of 2018 (February 15th) crept closer and closer we were all holding our breath for the changes. Finally, on February 9th, the TTB released the updated 5120.17 form and we jumped to action. We highlighted pertinent sections throughout InnoVint and provided thorough instructions to assist with the re-assignment of tax classes in order to keep our client’s 2018 5120.17 reports aligned with the new legislation.

We understand that maintaining compliant records can sometimes provoke.... strong feelings. We get it: the 5120.17 isn’t everyone’s best friend. Wineries are always on a deadline and when things come down to the wire it can be difficult to pull everything together when your focus has been on winemaking. This is one of the reasons why production software is such a crucial tool for wineries of all sizes. You should be able to trust your software provider to stay up to date with regulatory changes and take action immediately when needed.

At InnoVint we take great pride in our reputation as a reliable, dedicated service provider. The TTB regulatory changes are just one example of our fast response times and our commitment to excellence.

Winemaking Goes Mobile
21 September, 2015

San Francisco, Calif. – InnoVint, a new winery software company in the San Francisco Bay Area, announces the release of their real-time wine production software that tracks every operation from grape to bottle. The cloud-based system is the first of its kind to utilize mobile devices for data entry and work orders.

Winemakers are currently burdened with heavy data entry and cumbersome spreadsheets to track and report on winemaking operations. “My peers and I grew tired of all the paperwork and database maintenance that kept us tied to our desks,” says Ashley DuBois, Co-Founder and CEO of InnoVint and experienced winemaker. “I wanted a solution that allowed us to do our job on-the-go from anywhere. I knew it needed to be mobile, accurately model winemaking activities, and be approachable and usable for every team member.”

InnoVint works on a multitude of devices, from desktop computers and laptops to tablets, iPhones and iPods. The user interfaces are pleasing to the eye with intuitive icons and flexible process flows that simplify complex wine operations. Winemaking activities can be logged in real-time directly through the mobile app, or tasks can be assigned and completed digitally in a work order. The platform provides a comprehensive view of each wine in the cellar and detailed reporting of all wine activities, additions, and analytics at any point in time.

In late 2013 the company began partnering with select wineries in Napa and Sonoma to develop the functionality and test the software as a part of a Beta program. Today, these winemaking teams have opened up about their experiences with InnoVint.

“We could not be happier with their product and honestly feel that InnoVint will set a new caliber for winemaking software,” confesses Mike Lucia, Assistant Winemaker at Copain Wines in Healdsburg.  “We enjoy the overall design and layout, visual icons, and flexibility across multiple platforms. They truly made this a user-friendly program with all the detail you need to access and create work orders, manage inventory, and enter analysis in real-time.”

InnoVint can show great gains in productivity and team member accountability. “InnoVint empowers our cellar staff,” claims Megan Gunderson, Winemaker for Hall Wines and Walt Wines in St. Helena. “They don’t have to constantly rely on someone telling them what to do next. It also reduces the hours spent generating work orders, entering into a database system and filing. It allows for real-time data entry – which is especially powerful during harvest.”

Given the product’s ability to manage internal teams as well as cross-winery users, it provides great value to winemaking consultants. Katy Wilson, winemaker for Cobb Wilson Wine Consultants, has multiple clients using the platform. “Being able to assign work orders digitally and track their progress in real-time has helped to save me time and stay organized. I can be on the go in the vineyard or at a tasting event and still be able to track what is happening at the winery.”

InnoVint has ambitious plans for its software offerings. “We are a passionate, talented team of winemakers and engineers excited to show the wine industry how accessible, valuable, and fun great software can be, while at the same time tackling real problems no one has solved yet. There’s a lot more to come from us,” says Andrew Headrick, Co-Founder and CTO of InnoVint.

InnoVint is now accepting new winery clients. To learn more about InnoVint, please visit You can also follow the company on Facebook and Twitter at @goinnovint.
