About Duarte Nursery

Duarte Nursery, Inc. is a family owned and operated nursery located near Modesto in the Central Valley of California. Duarte Nursery is the largest permanent crops nursery in the United States, with a history of technology driven research, innovative products, and quality customer service. DNI produces 100% containerized grapevines from 385 certified clones and ultra clean rootstock. DNI's product formats include the Big Pot Vine, MagnumVine 24 and UberVine 36. DNI also produces almond trees, walnut rootstock, pistachio rootstock, citrus trees, cherry trees, and coming soon avocado trees.

DNI has its own vineyards and orchards, which include many experiments, that focus on growers concerns. They include technologies for rapid vine establishment and fruit production, and the evaluation of scion clones and rootstocks over a broad range of growing conditions.

DNI's fruit and nut tree program is based on the same strategy for success that DNI has enjoyed with its grapevine program  quality, friendship and service.

DNI continuously improves products through research, its Clean Plant program, its employees, friendships and reinvestment. Duarte Nursery has also developed several products that utilize the facilities during the  off-season. Poinsettias are offered during the holiday season from mid-November to Christmas.

Our goal at Duarte Nursery is to provide growers with the cleanest, highest quality nursery products available. Duarte Nursery has made significant investments in its facilities, with new generation greenhouses and steel over concrete benches. Duarte Nusery is committed to its Clean Plant program and its 100% containerized growing system.

For our customers, a few of the advantages are:

First, the plant has never been planted in the earth, which minimizes exposure to soil born pathogens and nematodes.

Second, being in a container, the product is planted with a complete root system intact, which encourages fast establishment and reduces root-wound exposure to crown gall.

Lastly, a containerized product is held on a nursery bench and is available for delivery any time of year, dormant or green growing. By eliminating the traditional spring window DNI hopes to have overcome some common planting challenges: wet spring, delayed field preperations, and replant after harvest.

Advantages

As growers you can trust that we have dedicated staff to the responsibility of understanding industry knowledge of plant health issues and regulations that will affect you. You can rely on our nursery resources and Micropropagation lab to be committed to new ways of minimizing plant health risks.

Product Formats:

Duarte Nursery produces grapevines in four product formats. The Big Pot Benchgraft, Tall Pot Benchgraft, MagnumVine 24" and the UberVine 36".

The UberVine!

Duarte Nursery proudly introduces the latest in grapevine nursery technology. The UberVine 36" has been developed in response to grower requests for a replant that will not require the usual time and labor to catch up to the rest of the crop.

The benchgrafted UberVine utilizes an extra-long rootstock cane, as well as a proportionally larger pot. When planted it can be tied directly to the training wire. Not only will growers save money on vine protectors and installation, but growers will also see cost savings in first-year training.

These benefits along with the luxury of earlier grape production make Duarte Nursery's UberVine among the industry's best values!

Duarte Nursery Stands Up
09 February, 2017

I’m John Duarte. I’m a farmer in California, and I'm in court fighting the federal government over whether farming is a violation of federal law. They want to fine me $8 million just for plowing my own land.

There are some spots in my field where water stands after a rain. I often don’t plow or plant in those areas, even though they are dry most of the time. But in 2012, I did plow one of these spots about seven inches deep to plant wheat. Regulators hit me with an order to stop, and when I challenged their authority in court, they countersued. Now they are demanding penalties that would wipe me out. They've even threatened to take my home.

So far, one federal court has sided with the government. But I'm determined to continue this fight, because no farmer in America should have to tolerate such an abuse of power.

Today, I have a mortgage on 450 acres of California farm land that a court has ordered me not to farm. My legal bills are $1.5 million and growing. And what the courts eventually decide about my own farm will have far-reaching effects on farmers across the nation.

The government wants the courts to interpret the law the way the government wishes it was written. Congress wrote the federal Clean Water Act to not regulate normal farming. But now regulators want to use that law against me and other farmers even when our farming does nothing to harm the environment. That flies in the face of everything I believe, as a farmer and as an American.

This isn’t right. Federal regulators want to control ordinary farming. They're starting with me and a few others. We need to stop them before they put more farm families in economic peril--before they make farming a federal offense.

I’m drawing the line right here, in my field.

If you care about farming, if you care about justice and you agree enough is enough, I hope you will stand with me.

Please give generously to the Duarte Defense fund.

Duarte Nursery Stocked With Abundant Supply of Ultra Clean Grapevines for 2014

Growers throughout California and beyond can take advantage of an abundant supply of disease-free rootstock and scion buds now available for the 2014 grafting and delivery season from Duarte Nursery, the largest permanent crops nursery in the United States.

“This is the cleanest generation of rootstocks ever produced,” asserts company president John Duarte, who points out that growers can plant with security, knowing that Duarte Nursery plant material is certified and virus free.

Duarte Nursery is currently stocked with 30 million rootstocks and 50 million scion buds, certified and tested for 2014. The company offers grapevines in multiple formats to accommodate a diversity of growing conditions, including the Big Pot Benchgraft, Tall Pot Benchgraft, the MagnumVine and UberVine.

Duarte’s Big Pot Benchgraft is a proven commodity, showing phenomenal growth performance on more than 100 million grapevines throughout California for the last 25 years. The Tall Pot has a smaller footprint, which works spectacularly well in warmer climates and can produce fruit by the second season. The Magnum Vine is excellent for organic growers, high-density vineyards or for those having limited water resources. Already 36 inches tall, the Uber Vine can be planted directly at stake, reducing vineyard establishment time and labor costs.

“We have very experienced field reps who explain how our products will work for each grower’s specific situation,” Duarte says. “We’re customer-focused. We’ll come out and walk you through it.”

Field representatives by area include:

Stefan Daniels, North Coast Central Coast, 415.309.3930
Steve Scheuber, Central Coast San Joaquin Valley, 209.531.5065
John Arellano, Sierra Foothills Lodi & Clarksburg, 559.804.6949
Ed Needham, San Joaquin Valley Southern Ca, 559.977.7282
Lorin Amsberry, Sacramento Valley Sierra Foothills, 530.300.5059
Vernon Hendley, San Joaquin Co Sacramento Valley, 209.613.4767
Joel Myers, Oregon Washington, 503.435.8932

Duarte Nursery has made significant capital investments in infrastructure over the last 4-5 years, allowing for two new greenhouses, increased on-site energy efficiency and a host of new, clean-plant product technologies.

“We had a vision a decade ago about producing clean plants and giving customers the selection and the service that they wanted,” Duarte says. “Now we’re there. We’ve got all the primary pieces in place. It’s exciting.”

Disease Free Vines - Guaranteed!
12 April, 2013

Duarte Nursery, the largest permanent crops nursery in the United States, has announced that its 2013 and 2014 grapevine material has tested free of red blotch associated virus and is now available for purchase.

Red blotch associated virus, or GRBaV, first emerged in the Napa Valley about five years ago. Only recently were researchers able to identify the disease pathogen and develop reliable tests to detect it.

Duarte Nursery’s proactive commitment to clean plant health consistently exceeds industry standards through practices of removing and replacing any red blotch symptomatic plant material for its customers and from its own foundation stock.

According to company president John Duarte, growers can be confident and can confirm for themselves that any rootstock or scion bud material from Duarte is free of red blotch contamination.

“We want to be completely transparent to our customers who are concerned about getting disease-free material,” Duarte says. “Whether it’s our propagation wood in cold storage or plant material from our vineyard increase blocks, they’re welcome to look at our test results or conduct their own. We have zero tolerance for propagating any red blotch-sourced materials.”

Red Blotch Tested And Clean
07 March, 2013

Since its inception in 1989, the Modesto-based Duarte Nursery, Inc. has been a company way out in front of current technology when it comes to plant health.

Duarte Nursery is the largest, permanent crops nursery in the United States. It got there by a proactive commitment to healthy, disease-free plant material - and by taking aggressive action before symptoms become problems.

“We have a policy of responding to virus symptoms before the disease is really detectable,” company president John Duarte says. “If we see any suspicious signs, we’ll tear out and replace vines at our own cost, as well as remove products from our program, simply because they might be diseased.”

HUGHSON, CA. June 28, 2011 – Duarte Nursery has begun phase one; part of a two year, 20 acre expansion project that will increase their total production capacity by 50%.  Duarte Nursery’s sales have grown over four fold in less than a decade.  This expansion will help them meet customer demand for their Clean Plant products.

“Growers are enjoying great advantages from our certified, clonal and containerized trees and vines. The result is record demand and we want to keep up,” said John Duarte, President of Duarte Nursery, Inc.

The new greenhouse will have passive ventilation and automated shading for reduced energy use. A new rolling bench design is economic, easy to clean and integrates a low cost heat delivery solution.  Mechanical parts for the vents and fans were chosen for efficiency, reliability and simplicity. Jim Duarte, founder of Duarte Nursery, has over forty years in the nursery business. This is the seventh generation of greenhouses that he has built.  Jim Duarte and his sons John and Jeff have teamed up with another family, Tom and Dean Conley from Conley Greenhouses to design a high performing and cost effective solution.

"The houses will give us excellent environmental control, enormous additional capacity, reduced cost of operation, flexibility across our crops and they should last for decades,” says Jim Duarte, founder of Duarte Nursery.

Frequently asked questions about clonal rootstocks:
11 May, 2011

What does “clonal” mean? In short, cloning a plant is the process of creating several, identical plants from one mother plant. At Duarte Nursery, we use clonal technology to reproduce the best rootstocks. The Mother tree is one tree selected from many, it will display desirable traits such as: higher production, suitability to a specific soil type, resistance to nematodes and root pathogens, or the increasingly-important characteristic of salt tolerance. For the farmer, this means that every cloned tree can grow and produce like the “best” tree!

Q:   What is a clonal rootstock?

A:  A clonal rootstock is a vegetatively propagated or cloned rootstock as opposed to a germinated seedling rootstock.  You carefully select a clonal variety to have your trees budded to.  now you can carefully select a clonal rootstock also.  A clonal rootstock is not a GMO (Genetically Modified Organism) in any way.

Q:  Why is it important to understand clonal rootstocks?

A:  Clonal rootstocks allow you to better select the genetics of your orchard.  Clonal rootstocks are more productive, uniform, disease resistant, and adaptable.

Q:  How do clonal rootstocks deliver these advantages?

A:  Through more precise genetic selection.  This is a big advantage for several reasons -

  1.  Clonal rootstocks are selected for specific traits rather than general characteristics. Whereas seedling rootstocks are selected for the general characteristics of a given number mother tree to produce similarly performing seedlings, Clonal rootstocks are selected as specific seedlings with the best combination of desired traits.  This is like selecting the best tree from a strong orchard and bringing the whole orchard to that level.
  2.  Clonal selection allows us to access diverse parents for an optimum combination of traits.  An example is Hansen (peach x almond) hybrid where the positive traits of each parent can be selected for.  By crossing peach and almond parents, UC breeders combined peach traits of nematode resistance and moist soil tolerance with almond traits of deep roots, salt tolerance and vigor. As a seedling population, the diverse parents produced a group of rootstock seedlings too diverse in combined characteristics to make a good commercial rootstock.  Some seedlings had the best of each parent, some the worst and many with combinations in between.  The one seedling with ideal traits was Hansen.  Production trials and grower experience validate the advantages of clonal Hansen.

In fact – in crops where clonal rootstocks are broadly available, seedling rootstocks are either unheard of or fading fast.

Q:  Where can I learn more and order my trees with clonal rootstocks?

A:  Duarte Nursery!

Please call our office for pricing. Pricing is dependent on quantities ordered.
