21 January, 2013
AstraPouch takes flight When we first wrote about the AstraPouch package, we deemed it “Too New to Be Trendy.” The concept of a compact, virtually indestructible envelope had earned acceptance in Europe, Australia and South Africa but was still unknown in North America. Dave Moynihan, a former executive at Constellation Wines, thought North America was ripe for the bag-withouta-box and founded AstraPouch North America in Penfield, N.Y. His first client was Glenora Winery in Dundee, N.Y., and upstate New York remains a leading market, but the appetite is growing, notably in the outdoorsy Pacific Northwest.

Wine Producers Serving Greener Packaging
18 September, 2012
Wine producers serving greener packaging
Perhaps more than any other alcoholic beverage, the packaging used for wine was often viewed as an indicator of quality. Heavy, glass bottles were the norm and served the wine industry for hundreds of years.
However, environmental and economic concerns have encouraged some in the industry to shed packaging weight and many wine producers are thinking outside the bottle. While wine glass bottles are still the majority, the opportunity for alternative packaging is increasing, said David Schuemann, owner and creative director of CF Napa Brand Design, a firm specializing in branding, which includes packaging and structural designs, for the wine, spirits, and beer industries. "There is a big change happening in the business, and the younger generation, who are green conscious, are the ones leading it into the future," he said. "Alternative packaging definitely has legs and it's here to stay. I don't see it as a fast fad in any way." Pouches, cartons aim to make wine 'greener' Schuemann said one of the latest packaging trends is wine served in pouches, such as the Astrapouch, a wine package that stands up straight and flat, and can hold the equivalent of two 750-ml bottles. Its resealable, one-way plastic spout keeps opened wine fresh for up to a month in the fridge.
Schuemann said recent sales figures show the Astrapouch sales have outpaced the company's glass bottle sales. "It's a really good fit for their core demographic; outdoor enthusiasts of all types who are environmentally aware," he said. "I think they love the whole alternative feel." Wine lovers shouldn't have to choose between quality wine and a healthy planet, said Matthew Cain, owner of Yellow+Blue wines. Cain has been in the wine business for years, and said the industry has been somewhat behind on producing innovative packaging. "Packaging doesn't make a wine good or bad; there is plenty of bad wine out there in glass," he said. "We look at packaging to help achieve our business goal of delivering high-quality wine to the market without an environmental cost, we look at it as a solution rather than a gimmick." Astrapouch was featured in Packaging Digest!

Wine in a pouch is one more move by the wine industry into more environmentally friendly and convenient packaging. Clif Family Winery, St. Helena, CA, has introduced the Climber Pouch, a 1.5L pouch of wine that contains the equivalent of two 750mL bottles and is designed for the outdoors.
Clif Family Winery owner Gary Erickson says, "The Climber Pouch is affectionately known as the ‘all-terrain wine transport' around here. A day spent out on the hiking or bike trail that ends with friends, food and wine is our idea of a perfect day. The portability and flexibility of the Climber Pouch lets outdoor enthusiasts of all types wind down their adventures with the pleasure of great wine." The pouches, which include Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon, sell for $16.99.

06 June, 2012
Glass wine bottles are under threat from Tetra-Pak cartons, foil pouches and tins cans, new research claims.
The alternative packaging, long dismissed as downmarket, is set to grow by up to 15 per cent next year.
Paper, carton and foil can be cheaper to manufacture in bulk, more convenient for the consumer and more environmentally friendly, according to a study by The Grocer. It found that ranges of boxed wine, previously associated with cheaper grape varieties, are increasingly being introduced into mainstream supermarket shopping. M&S has ten varieties of wine sold in pouches and Asda is introducing four own-label pouches this summer - one chardonnay but also a rose, pinot grigio and shiraz. Pouches have an estimated 80 per cent lower carbon footprint than glass packaging, said the report. The market for wine in cans is set to grow to 200 million litres a year across Europe next year, finding a market with young drinkers in particular. The first Tetra-Pak carton of wine is expected to be introduced to the UK for the first time within 12 months. And paper bottles, used already for milk in Asda, are to be adapted for wine and should be in shops by the end of this year. A spokesman for The Grocer said: "Packaging innovation is set to transform the look and sustainability credentials of the wine aisle. "Buyers predict a sharp increase in the number of wines in cans, pouches, cartons and paper bottles on shelves." New packaging offers wine to go for picnic season
24 May, 2012
New packaging offers wine to go for picnic seasonEnjoying good wine in the great outdoors is fun, but toting glass bottles on the trail is no picnic. Enter the new crop of alternatively packaged wines in cartons, cans and other trail-ready options. Sure, for actual hydration you'll want to tote along water or whatever energy drink you favor. But for that moment when the hike is done, the mountain bike path conquered, or you're just relaxing and grilling a few steaks on a lazy Sunday, these wines make it easy to blend libations with explorations. As Brad Day, a wine lover and outdoorsman who runs the outdoor activities website WeekendSherpa.com puts it, "It adds a nice element to sitting back and enjoying the natural surroundings." So here are some wines that make good traveling partners. — PACK A POUCH The Climber is billed as "all-terrain wine transport," and it is. Available in chardonnay or cabernet sauvignon, this wine comes in a foil pouch with a hole punched at the top so it can be clipped to a backpack with a carabiner hook. It shouldn't come as a big surprise that The Climber comes from Clif Family Winery founded by Gary Erickson and wife Kit Crawford, the people behind the Clif energy bar. The Climber is widely available and also can be found at the Clif winery tasting room Vela Vino in St. Helena, a popular spot with bicyclists. The pouch holds the equivalent of two regular bottles and has a suggested retail of $17, so the wine is light on your wallet as well as your pack. The winery works with the group 1 Percent for the Planet, and 1 percent of Climber sales go to charity, in this case a partnership with Trees for the Future. What to pair with it? Gorp is good, or if you want to go a little more upscale you might try the Smoked Paprika Almonds from the Gary & Kit's Napa Valley line of snacks. Astrapouch Named a Top 10 Logistics Innovator for 2012!
20 April, 2012
Cheers to AstraPouch from Food Logistics Magazine for being an Innovator in Alternatives to the Traditional Wine and Spirits Bottle! While consumers took years to adjust to the Stelvin screw cap on wine bottles, the transition to alternative packaging seems to be going a little faster. Undoubtedly, the wider acceptance of more environmentally friendly packaging has something to do with it. The AstraPouch was first developed and launched in South Africa in 2008, but the company is growing quickly in the U.S. Not only is the pouch a superior way to maintain freshness, it’s great for shippers too. One truckload of empty AstraPouch packages is equal to 14 truckloads of empty glass bottles. http://www.foodlogistics.com/article/10657357/top-10-logistics-innovators?page=3 Introducing the Newest Ready-To-Drink Cocktail in the Astrapouch from Malibu - Melon Margarita!

The brand does approximately half its global business in the U.S.

20 March, 2012
Astrapouch North America and Wright Labels, leaders in packaging and marketing solutions for the wine industry, announced the launch of the “Tag Your Bag” program at the Wineries Unlimited Trade Show, March 28 – 29, 2012, offering a low-cost packaging solution for small to mid size wineries. Additionally, Wright Labels will offer on site concierge design services. Wright will operate the center in Booths #505 - 507 and Astrapouch will be in Booth #703, from March 28th through March 29th. The show will be open each day from 10am to 4pm. Back to the future with wine pouches
07 June, 2011
NEW YORK | Tue Jun 7, 2011 6:03am EDT (Reuters Life!) - The quest for the perfect wine container has been going on since the Stone Age when our ancestors drank naturally fermented grapes from animal-skin pouches. They are now back in vogue in the United States where at least three U.S. wineries are offering wines in high tech foil pouches that resemble children's fruit drinks -- only for adults. Glenora Winery in New York and the Clif Family Winery and Farm in California's Napa Valley use the pouches for wines from their vineyards, while Indulge, a start-up based in Santa Barbara, California is selling its wines, made from Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir grapes sourced from growers in California, in the containers. "We use it for our Riesling and Chardonnay. It's the same wine as you'll find in the bottles and it's really good quality," said Glenora's winemaker Steve DiFrancesco, adding the pouches flew off shelves when they appeared last summer. The pouches, made in South Africa by AstraPouch, take half as long to chill as a bottle, weigh much less, and will keep the 1.5 liters, the equivalent of two regular-size bottles, of wine they contain fresh for a month after they've been open, DiFrancesco said. Clif, which also produces the energy snack of the same name, put a karabiner, or metal loop, on the pouch and added it to its line of Climber wines, which include California Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon, organic wines also available in bottles "It's easy to pack in and pack out. It rolls into this tiny ball," said Linzi Gay, the winery's general manager. "It's the perfect way to take wine into the woods to go camping or hiking." Indulge winery's owner Pierre LaBarge said its 2009 Pinot Noir and its 2009 Sauvignon Blanc are the first vintage it is selling in the pouches. "I was looking to make a great value wine and I was looking for an environmentally friendly package," LaBarge explained. "This weights only 1.5 oz (44 ml) and it reduces the carbon footprint by 85 percent. "I don't believe someone should have to pay just for convenience or to be environmental," said the 30-year-old winemaker. "These are world class wines in this package." Wineries in Australia, Europe and South Africa have been using the pouches for several years, according to Dave Moynihan, president of AstraPouch North America. Patrick McGovern, head of the Biomolecular Archaeology Laboratory at the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, told National Geographic that the first wine-tasting may have occurred during the Paleolithic age when humans drank the juices of naturally fermented wild grapes from animal-skin pouches. 29 March, 2011
If you're nostalgic for those fun Capri Sun pouches you sipped as a kid, you might be interested in the new package wine package vintners are trying out in an effort to be eco-friendly. Indulge Wines, headquartered in Buellton (Santa Barbara County), California, recently rolled out two 1.5L wines packaged in an "Astrapouch": a 2009 Sauvignon Blanc, North Coast; and a 2009 Pinot Noir, Central Coast. Although right now they're only available in California, by summertime, wine-drinkers nationwide will be able to purchase the portable pouches. (Each pouch is the equivalent of two 750mL wine bottles.) Winemaker Alan Philips has good chops. He formerly made wine for Foley Estates Winery (in Lompoc, also in Santa Barbara County) and has consulted on many Central Coast winery projects. A cut-out handle on the Indulge Wines' pouch allows you to grab-and-go, whether it's to the local park for a symphony performance or into the back yard to sip with a dinner of grilled fish. Owner and founder Pierre LaBarge IV has a master's degree in viticulture and a keen interest in wine production. The wine is eco-friendly for many reasons: It's drinkable up to 30 days after opening (so it won't go to waste) and fewer fossil fuels are needed to transport the wine than if it were inside a glass bottle. Just two percent of the product is its weight -- the remaining 98% is the wine. Unlike boxed wines, which are essentially a bag inside a box, there is no cardboard or paperboard needed to package the wine. And finally, you're probably wondering: Is this wine any good? I sampled the 2009 Sauvignon Blanc, North Coast, and enjoyed the balance of zippy, acidic notes with minerals. My conclusion is that it's the perfect transition into warmer weather. The wine is not packed with tropical-fruit notes but it's still fresh and crisp, and a nice departure from all the heavy red wines you've probably been drinking all winter long.

2009 Pinot Noir central coastWinemakers often refer to Pinot Noir as the “heartbreak grape.” Pinot Noir can be difficult to farm and make; it is a tempermental grape that demands a fair amount of attention. But when it turns out well, it can be one of the most pleasurable red wines. Its inherent flavor profile seems to go well with just about everything. It’s also one of those red wines you can just sip, without food.
2009 Sauvignon Blanc north coastSauvignon Blanc, when well farmed and made, has a naturally bright, crisp acidity that makes it fun to drink. It is the ideal sipping wine at the end of a long work day, or the perfect wine to take along on a picnic. Sauvignon Blanc is best served chilled, but try not to get it too cold. Putting too much of a hard chill on Sauvignon Blanc will mask some of its more delicate, fruit flavors.the eco-friendly packaging alternativeBenefits of the astrapouch Package Type Glass Bag-In-Box Carton Astrapouch Lowest Carbon Footprinthow will you enjoy indulge wines™?Indulge Wines is packaged in the Astrapouch and can travel with you wherever you go: ■ Visits to the beach And just about anywhere else you can imagine. Wine Trail Traveler - The AstraPouch is the perfect hiking companion!
14 September, 2010
New and unique wine packaging has been introduced into the United States. Will it take a while to catch on? Already the AstraPouch is being used in the UK, South Africa and Australia. The AstraPouch was developed by AstraPouch North America and is being used by Glenora Wine Cellars to package their Trestle Creek Riesling. Glenora is using the 1.5L pouch. AstraPouch packaging offers a number of advantages for wineries and for consumers. These pouches are very light. If you have ever moved a case of empty glass wine bottles you’ll notice how heavy glass can be. This all adds up to an increased carbon footprint. By using AstraPouch packaging the carbon footprint should dramatically decrease. The lighter weight of carrying wine is also great for the consumer who wants to carry the wine while camping or hiking. The nozzle on the pouch allows wine to pour out but keeps oxygen from entering into the pouch and oxidizing the wine. According to the AstraPouch North America website, after opening the pouch, the wine will stay fresh for up to one month. Kudos to Glenora Wine Cellars for beginning the use of a new environmentally friendly option to glass bottles.
